No, I have been using random things that are the right colour as placeholders (sand, grass, water, earth, etc) in order to avoid having to deal with archs just yet

You want to use vector graphics, in addition to pngs? That isn't going to work, managing one type of graphic file format is bad enough, two completely different ones would be nightmarish (and all existing clients would break, without even fallback functionality).

In principle there is no reason why the face number couldn't correspond to a 3d model rather than an image. In practise, there are no 3d models to correspond to. If you
1) make lots of 3d models after you have finished your japanese town. (for I assume that it is you, mikeeusa, who wrote that last post).
2) get someone who knows how to write a 3d engine and modifies the client appropriatly.
3) get your 3d models to map to the 2d drawings that exist currently
4) export your images as an alternate graphics set

then it should work, at least in theory.

However the difficulty of steps 1-3 (4 is relatively straightforward) and the amount of models that would be needed, would seem to mitigate against that occuring any time soon.

Well, Daimonin is a Crossfire fork with 3D graphics... I think Michtoen (the author) had some issues with 3D, that's why he forked instead of doing a CF client :)

AFAICT Daimonin isn't true 3d yet, there is something about an Ogre3d engine on their website.

Anyway there is a whole slew of other things that it seems to be focusing on, such as female characters.

I expect mikee will drop the topic of 3d now.... :)
