In principle there is no reason why the face number couldn't correspond to a 3d model rather than an image. In practise, there are no 3d models to correspond to. If you
1) make lots of 3d models after you have finished your japanese town. (for I assume that it is you, mikeeusa, who wrote that last post).
2) get someone who knows how to write a 3d engine and modifies the client appropriatly.
3) get your 3d models to map to the 2d drawings that exist currently
4) export your images as an alternate graphics set
then it should work, at least in theory.
However the difficulty of steps 1-3 (4 is relatively straightforward) and the amount of models that would be needed, would seem to mitigate against that occuring any time soon.
