Some ideas

Post by penbrock »

I installed and love the game and I am ever running a public server. With that said let me state some of my ideas. I found not much of a problem installing and working the client but I must say that it is not very friendly to none techie/geek types. I think if we wanted to attract more players there are some simple changes that can be made.

1) Make one installer to install the client and the GTK.
2) Put a sheet in with the client with the commands and maybe the Players Handbook from the main site that they can print out if wanted.
3)Add more presets.
4) Make a bind for use as the middle mouse button.
5) Maybe add a text field showing what is bound to F1-F8 for easy access
6) Rename 'Quit Player' to 'Delete Player'

Just my ideas for what it is worth

I assume you're referring to the Windows version of the client?

I could bundle GTK, but then, it becomes a real pain to install, if I remember correctly...

I'll probably check someday, to make sure. But GTK isn't that Windows friendly, unfortunately (the only nice version I'm aware of is GAIM's).

Yes for Window$. Most people still inly use Windows. I myself use both Win and Linux. But it would be nice to have a simple installer for Windows users

For which skills and abilities (etc.) ?

This can get touchy though..

What about skill that are not available to all players - such as meditate?
Should the "m" key be reserved for that skill anyway?

Keep in mind the reserved movement keys for those playing on a laptop:

y k u
\ | /
h -- s -- l
/ | \
b j n

There might be other aspects to consider that I can't think of right now.

Going a little off topic here..

Does anyone know off hand where the preset keys are stored?

Many years ago in the Netrek forums, people used to post their keybinding(it was a simple text file IIRC) files for others to use. Is the keybinding file for Crossfire that easy to access *and* to read?

How about having a list of preset bindings on the server per race/class and sending one for a particular character to the client, if it has been requested?

$HOME/.crossfire/keys

Its plain text, but not easily human readable, unless you know what each part means.

Wouldn't it be better to make it easier to bind actions to keys? Like having a skill list, much like the spell list in GTK2 version, that you could right click to bind to a key. Also I'd love to see binding incorporated into the spell list.

Ya that would be great. Just an easier way to bind for non-techie types

Feel free to submit a feature request at http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_i ... tid=363833 :)

(features requests, even if right now there are many pending, is a good way to not lose track of what people are expecting)
