problem with motd's are
1) they are (always) way toooooo long
2) nobody ever reads them (for they are too long)
imo a motd should _only_ include 'messages of the day' (like team wars, rule updates) and no general text. This general text should be provided to new players only on an accept or die map
Bibendi ergo sum
or rather: sum ergo bibendi

maybe something could be done with storing a hash of the motd?
so that if a client connects to a server it will display motd then store servername_motd_hash
then if you reconnect it will check if the hash is stored, then fetch the motd and compare the hashes.
If they match show nothing, if they don't then display it (or say "MOTD has been updated, use the motd command to display the new one")

I think this has been implimented in cvs, don't know of any servers that use it though.

As I recall, it has been implimented in CVS on the server side, but clients don't do much with it yet even in cvs.

/me starts up the client, recently updated to cvs, selects a server, and sees three tabs: "news", "rules", and "login".
