and when no-one else is on? this then makes the game dependant on high level people who are continually around to help noobs. its hard enough to find potions of life as it is...

depends on your definition of high-level I guess....

It should only take a level 20-ish character to kill a couple of any given type of monster that a low-level character might fall to.

Metalforge always has people on, and if you offer them some compensation, then you should find you get a reply....

As for other servers with fewer people, well it would be quite easy to make this behaviour which can be switched off.

If you think losing items is harsh play on a permadeath server sometime...

i play nethack, i dont like perma death. i like the current system, and hate in wc3 when you die, you drop all your items, and then you cant get back to them, cause you used them to get there...

what's wc3?

The only thing that comes to mind is wing commander 3, but I don't think that had items.

its a nice game, but its more like command&conquer, and sucks when forced into a rpg map...

but the point is that sacks, bags, and stuff tied to your body wont fall off f you die. if you kill someone, then leave them their, whatever they were holding might drop, but not their wallet, backpack, clothes, etc...

if you die you lose all bar the 3 most valuable items you have equiped. They drop to the floor.
since cf1.7, i often die at low level when a monster have a powerfull wand. and powerfull wands often destroy items on the floor. so... i prefer to loose xp. I know how to regain xp, not some items.
Maybe allow a player to mark some items 'cannot lose'
I like it. Everybody mark all their items :D So, we don't need to add some more clics.
