Illustrators and Web designers requested

Post by Lauwenmark »

Here is the deal...

There is an already old logger project included in Crossfire. For various reasons, it has never been fully completed. The purpose of the logger was to present game statistics on several webpages. People could check the current status of players, the most famous arena combats or the most visited maps. The thing itself was divided in:

- A CF plugin making a bridge between the server and the database;
- A database containing the various logged stats;
- Some PHP-based webpages to present the results.

Currently, although it is still considered Beta-stage code, it is working correctly with PostgreSQL and Apache. A mySQL port is under way.

The problem is that the webpages are definitely ugly. They were quickly written to allow beta-testing of the logger and were never upgraded since then.

So this is a call for help. What the logger currently need is:

- A better Web design: I'm quite certain it should be discussed about how we should present the informations (for me, this is the easy part);

- Some pictures: We had the idea of displaying a picture of the character on the character sheet. Basically, one picture is needed for each race/class combination. Since it would be quite a lot, probably one picture for each race would be a good start.

Even on that limited basis, the requirements are well above my own skills (I have no artistic formation). So I call for help everyone able to:

- Hold a pencil better than me (shouldn't be too hard to find - as a reference, here is my own attempt to represent an Elf);
- CG scanned pictures (my CGing level could probably be used as an absolute zero reference point);

Picture constraints are:
- They should be saved in the JPEG format;
- They should fit in a standard browser with a screen size of 1024x768;
- They shouldn't eat up all the space - there must be some left to display the character's sheet.

Someone wishing to help ?

Edit: Just replaced the picture by a cleaner one - the previous version was just too crappy :?

I couldn't draw anything like that... very nice one :)

Is there someplace where we can already see what the current stats look like?

And which logger is that? I think there are several out there.

This is the logger shipped with the crossfire server as a plugin. It is unrelated to various Perl scripts used so here and there to report basical stats and scores.

An example of the logger can be found at:
http://mids.student.utwente.nl/~crossfi ... crossfire/

Note that the informations displayed by this site are somewhat buggy - This is because it is the unfinished port over mySQL.

What are you looking to do with the current look-n-feel of the web design?

What are you looking to avoid with the current look-n-feel of the web design? :)

Probably make them better-looking with a stronger relationship with the game background theme (which is definitely a 'wizards and warriors' one). The current webdesign is somewhat arid; it doesn't really make you say "Hey, that game looks cool, let's give it a try".

Too complex/overloaded pages. If you cannot quickly find what you want on a webpage, if you're annoyed by pop-ups or toys flying here and there, you'll not consult the page anymore. The design should be clear enough to be immediately understandable by everybody, including newbies.

No one is able to draw better ??? Maybe we should try to get a hold on some GFX-makers for Crossfire then...

In the meantime, it means I'll have to try to fill the blanks myself - the result certainly will not be great, but a crappy picture is probably better than no picture at all.

Still not disgusted ? Then here is the second one to come: the beloved dwarf...

May Mostrai excuse me for that !

How do I have to compile CF to get the logger?
Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards
for they are subtle and quick to anger.
