Thanks a lot for the detailed reply, Leaf!

Also, on a different but related note, I managed to compile and run crossfire server 1.71 on ArchLinux. Having been through that, here's a suggestion to make it easier for future visitors to the crossfire website who wish to do the same: in http ...

Coming back - what's the current status of public servers?

Coming back to take a look at how crossfire is doing now (I used to play it about 10 years ago or so), I have a question regarding the current status of public servers.

As far as I could see, good old metalforge is still there, though I wasn't yet able to find any non-afk player. However, it runs ...

In fact, the really hard part about inscription is getting the skill! It may be the least common skill scroll in the game afaik :o

Same thing happens with the X (non-gtk) cfclient in linux (at least the current version for gentoo, and in fact I never had a client that did *not* produce this bug)

Default listen level seems to be 9. I tried the different levels a week or two ago because I was annoyed by all the spam about what my pets were hacking, but annoyingly enough this is not suppressed before listen 2 if I remember well, and then almost everything else is suppressed. IMHO the listen ...

Of cults and deities

I've recently started playing a fireborn character. Made it a monk for meditation, becomng an obvious expert in pyromancy.

Now came the time to chose a cult. So I asked myself: From a role-playing perspective, what would be a proper choice for a conscious ball of fire? The obvious possibilities ...

An even simpler suggestion than cavesomething's :

just make a threshold to the rod level one is allowed to use, based on the use magic skill, say rods up to double the skill level. This would btw make the skill useful in an obvious way.

Examples:
player has level 7 in use magic skill -> he can ...

Re: permanent experience option

Thanks a lot leaf for the detailed reply! That's the kind of explanation that makes me want to dig into the code someday... maybe... :o

crossfire.metalforge.net is using the permanent exp system (see my previous post) - I don't know of any public server that is using 100% permanent exp though ...
