Godly retribution, ridiculous

Post by Dwak »

After losing 40/81 levels (amounting to about 90% of my experience), and 90% of my apartment items because I accidently cast word of recall three times in a row instead of holy word, I'm a bit ticked off. A month of work is eliminated in a brief instant by a truly sadistic feature. It's caused me to take a hiatus from the game (quit the character, will probably eventually start back over), despite really enjoying it as a break from a stressful job (this was far more frustrating than the job has ever been).

This feature is massively unbalanced as are many features (I postulate that 95% of the spell-castings in the game are of 10% of the spells, the item_power system in use on some servers is unfathomably counter-intuitive, and that in most cases there is a uniquely single-best item of every type that completely invalidates all substitutions).

I find it truly stunning that it's thought reasonable to punish a momentary lapse with a complete revocation of a character and holdings. Frankly, death I can deal with... even repeated deaths... even 100 deaths (as this was near). But the destruction of most of my stored items rather tipped the balance for me. There's no real reason for this feature other than a sadistic desire to occasionally cause players to quit (I did, and I imagine most would have). Are the 20-100 worldwide players truly too many?

Isn't there a more intelligent punishment for a lapse of this type? (If you accidently kill a player, you lose a luck point... If you screw up and hack yourself to death, you die once... If you accidently mark your Holy Shield and apply flint and steel, you lose it... If you accidently cast a high-level spell a few times by pushing the wrong binding, you lose everything...) Why not lose the ability to cast a spell for a while... Have to offset -50000 favor by praying forever... Lose 10 prayer levels... Is this really reasonable as is?

Never leave important stuff in main apartment rrom

Post by Atan »

This is a word of advice for everybody: never ever leave items you really care about laying on the floor of the main apartment room. That's what the extra rooms you buy are for...

It has happened many times to many players that a burning hands or other destructive spell was cast while in the apartment, just when the word of recall activated, or repeatedly cast while dying. The latter is the most usual case : you are casting *** spell all around you, then die, but still cast it a couple of times before you realize you're destroying your apartment instead of *** monster.

Bort its not a matter of watching your grace, a spell such as FoD or remove curse even, they drain close to 200-300 grace a shot, and you accident cast it two more times then you anticipated and boom your dead. If it was as simple as "watch your grace" there wouldnt be threads on it.

then does "Do not have an overactive trigger finger" work?
I always watch my gr, and i've used spells that really eat up grace. I make it habit to keep my gr positive.

... Bort you dont seem to understand, people do it by ACCIDENT notice the word ACCIDENT. Its not we choose to go -300 grace, it happens by ACCIDENT. The purpose of this thread is to discuss how stupid Godly Retribution is not how you dont get affected by it because you watch your grace.

Godly retribution can be quite painful and annoying. It all depends on your luck really, because there is a roll which gives you a chance of not suffering a side effect at all. However if you fail this roll, you're pretty much doomed.

Failing a prayer at -20 -40 gr makes you cast wonder, -40 -60 confuses, -60 -150 paralyses and -150 sends you flying for miles with a huge blast.
Wearing an item of lifesaving might help prevent accidents, not being able to have less then -150 grace helps too, gods can never smite you that way :P

Iirc savebeds are damned, nomagic etc. so that if you do die casting a spell than you should not be able to carry on casting it after coming back to life.
However if you send lots of casting/moving commands at the same time, die, then you can just move off your bed and annihilate half or even all of your apartment.

Maybe death(coming back to life) should take time(several seconds?) and the server would not process(stack?) any commands coming from a dead player?

Again, just to keep things linked - let's see how the new Godly Retribution fixes do.

It's locked to keep the discussion in one thread vs two (and because phpBB can split posts, but not merge them..)
