Firing a rod in a keybind is...
Fire once in a specified direction:
apply -a rod of heal; stay f; apply -u rod of heal
apply -a rod of firebolt; north f; apply -u rod of firebolt
apply -a rod of firebolt; fire 1; fire_stop; apply -u rod of firebolt
Fire continuously in a direction until <fire ...

I have so far been unable to make a bind that fires a rod so it does not hit me. I only recently learned how to guarantee apply/unapply via bindings (-u / -a) to insure access to rod of word of recall / rod of heal:
apply -u rod of word of recall; apply -a rod of word of recall; fire stay; fire ...
apply -u rod of word of recall; apply -a rod of word of recall; fire stay; fire ...

Word of recall
I never go anywhere the first time without a word of recall scroll/staff/rod. While this is not much of a solution if you use a Bed Of Reality there, it is how I visit Brest without having to be a high-level.

Removing ~/.crossfire/sounds...
Even more recently, removing ~/.crossfire/sounds fixed a sound problem even though the files in that directory could be played directly to /dev/dsp when the client was not active.
