I have so far been unable to make a bind that fires a rod so it does not hit me. I only recently learned how to guarantee apply/unapply via bindings (-u / -a) to insure access to rod of word of recall / rod of heal:
apply -u rod of word of recall; apply -a rod of word of recall; fire stay; fire_stop; apply -u rod of word of recall
I tried this with a rod of firebolt, for example:
apply -a rod of firebolt; fire; fire_stop; apply -u rod of firebolt
Or, even though it seems ridiculous to have to specify a direction:
apply -a rod of firebolt; fire northwest; fire_stop; apply -u rod of firebolt
Any clues? Mayy it would be good to set up a keybind tips area on the wiki?

Firing a rod in a keybind is...
Fire once in a specified direction:
apply -a rod of heal; stay f; apply -u rod of heal
apply -a rod of firebolt; north f; apply -u rod of firebolt
apply -a rod of firebolt; fire 1; fire_stop; apply -u rod of firebolt
Fire continuously in a direction until <fire> <direction> pressed or until fire_stop:
apply -a rod of firebolt; fire 1; apply -u rod of firebolt
apply -a rod of minor healing; fire 0; apply -u rod of minor healing
No clue how to fire a rod in the direction you are facing. It may not be possible?
