The Stifling on Chat is killing the game
It's not the fantastic graphics and 3d sounds which make crossfire a great game to play. It has been the wonder friendships which have developed while playing.
The DMs have crossed the line with their precieved enforcement of the shout chanel. The shout chanel is the only chanel which everyone can see and which encorouges and stimulates new convervastions and random friendships. It is the human element which makes everything worthwhile.
The board has become like a East German city under the reign of the KGB. It's insulting and it sucks.
The DMs have broken the sacred trust between the players and the game.

<<Get a room
- or should I say use tell and say or form a party. There is absolutly no reason to abuse the global shout channel since you have these other options for communicating with other players without abusing the *public* airwaves.>>
This response doesn't address any of the issues. The only abuse happening is with slap happy DMs interfering with the regular play of the players. Perhaps some people need to learn how to listen. The "chat" channel just creates 2 shout chanels and obstructs adjusting the listening according to other parameters, like not wanting to see every kill on the network.
Getting a "room", or forming a "party" are all ***private*** communication venues and ***prevent*** the public playground from being used to meet ***new*** people and obstructs the enjoyment of the game for the players.
Since there seems to be a high level of density on this subject, I've have to use an example.
Over the summer MoonWhisper came on the board and met and exchanged a lot of private communication with Chris and Ragnor. Watching their conversations on the shout channel, I was able to jump in and help them with programming tips and a discussion of the GTK+ client.
Further conversations between bbgirl and yugi happened together. And they became friends. I've been a friend of Katia for years through shout conversations.
Even watching Bort get repeatedly muzled and jails has become part of the interactions of the game.
The DM's have redined all communication in shout (which is even beyound the net metalforge rules) as suspected deviant communications. Its become a insuffofrable tyrany and its destroying the play of the game. If you want to play in silence, play on your own server.

I would agree that socialising is an important factor which makes this game attractive to players, however we should take into account those that do no enjoy listening to random chatter on the shout and keeping the channel that you _must_ listen to clear while providing other means of communication seems fair.
On another note, those 'other means of communication' may not be as obvious or as easy to use for younger players. Maybe something shouod be done in this direction? To improve or make more accessisble those other means of communication.
This is where the channel structure of communications comes in of which chat channel is a first step.

This is non-sense. The bullies have taken over the playground. If you don't want to here the shout channel, set the listen level to 0
Why make everyone else suffer.

Kinda seems pointless to force everyone to listen 0 when shout channel exists for important server wide communications, doesn't it?mrbrklyn wrote: This is non-sense. The bullies have taken over the playground. If you don't want to here the shout channel, set the listen level to 0

On the point of bullies, it's a matter of opinion, metalforge tries to create a friendly community, but of course you can argue all you want that the balance is not right. If you do have any better suggestions then it might be worth proposing them and finding a way that makes everyone happy rather than blindly forcing your own opinions.

Because that is what ***listen is for***. Who is ***everyone*** to go to listen 0. ***everyone*** wants to play the game normally and use the normal shout channel. Shout is not for important server wide communication. Shout is SHOUT - Like "Shout " - the drinking song, and SHOUT like "THROW IT TO FIRST", or "HEY YOU FOX LADY", or "Throw it to me I'M OPEN I'M OPEN"
Overwise why the heck is SHOUT on by default and documented in the Scorn Center Signs and entry, and THERE IS NO REFERENCE ANYWHERE TO CHAT.
Chat is an creation for a bunch of repressive ego maniac who mistake Crossfire for a library.

Here a suggestion, LEAVE it alone like it was for 5 years. And I NEVER blindly do anything, let alone force an opinion on everybody. I leave that to the current DMsSalathar wrote: If you do have any better suggestions then it might be worth proposing them and finding a way that makes everyone happy rather than blindly forcing your own opinions.
I see this last paragraph as nothing more than an attempt to discredit the facts. Your in no position to talk for "everyone". If everyone wants this so badly then the DMs wouldn't need to keep pushing their weight around on the topic so much.
The only issue on the table is if it is good for the game.
In that, IT SUCKS.........
I've had maybe 5 run ins with DMs over the last 5 years, 4 of them over the shout channel in the last 30 days.
It's not right and it is repressive.

Actually, chat was my idea. *ducks*
I orignially did that when there was the previous issues with off-topic conversation on the shout channel. To my mind then, chat should have been a way to allow gratuitously off-topic conversation on the server, with shout keeping the role it had before.
That this isn't what has happened can be considered unfortunate, and certainly not what it was designed for.
Of course ideally there would be a proper channel system in place, I might even implement one if ever I have a couple of weeks to spare (but I don't now, and won't for the foreseeable future...).

Those that do not enjoy nonsense that would no doubt spawn on the shout. And who still need to use some public means of communication for game specific issues.mrbrklyn wrote: Who is ***everyone*** to go to listen 0.
I believe you are confusing shout and chat there. The fact that everyone is used to 'shout rather then 'chat should not be an excuse to stop the adoption of 'shout vs chat' divide.mrbrklyn wrote: ***everyone*** wants to play the game normally and use the normal shout channel.

Quote from the rules page: "Only Crossfire related topics or emergency/help requests should be used on the Shout channel".
Also, are you seriously proposing to make dragon in Navar listen to a ball game going on in Scorn Arena?

Go read 'motd and www.metalforge.net/rules/ more often.mrbrklyn wrote: Overwise why the heck is SHOUT on by default and documented in the Scorn Center Signs and entry, and THERE IS NO REFERENCE ANYWHERE TO CHAT.
Also it would be much wiser and productive to point out the need to change Scorn signs rather then use them to back up 'pre chat channel views'.
I see nothing wrong with ego maniacs playing cf, as long as they are big in numbers, do you?mrbrklyn wrote: Chat is an creation for a bunch of repressive ego maniac who mistake Crossfire for a library.

There is nothing wrong with allowing people to enjoy as long as the process does not hinder the enjoyment of others, this is the reason behind existing policies.
