having ac -20, and then applying speed boots of of steel, my Ac DROPS to -16.

that cant be intented, i _DO_ understand they dont give any positive Ac, but it shouldnt lower your ac, imo

edit: changed title to make it less obscure

It would be helpful to see dm dump of those boots, it does not sound like something intended.

Edit: Now, looking at the date on this post: is this still an issue?

for me, its not an issue, i cancellated them.

i have no idea if this is changed/fixed/whatevered for no one replied ;) so it likely is still an in game issue

a dm dump... well, i can try to fight a gaelotroll naked...

So the boots did give negative ac? and that way you removed it?

Probably not the safest of ideas, but than I bet there is nothing in cf you would not want to try :P

as i wrote before: with the boots -5, my ac was -16, without them, it was -20

after i used cancellation on the boots, and then applied the boots (+0) my ac would be -21

so it looks like the boots give (1 + magic) Ac
i suppose they should give max(0, 1+ magic) for the reason i gave in the topic start: bad shoes cant affect good armour :)

Searching this page for '-5' brings up one result, or did you post it someplace else?

It looks that way, I think there are several other items that have ac bonuses applied on top of basic item stats.

no, i just _thought_ i wrote it, but definitely wasn't as obvious as it had to be :)

ok, having Ac -20, then applying speed boots of of steal -5 (the "of of" is a bug in the alchemy file), my Ac is not unaltered but it drops to -16.

this might add some clarity? :)

There are two types of boots of steel from what I can see - the ones that use high_boots archetype, low_boots archetype.

Object high_boots
name jack boots
name_pl jack boots
client_type 291
face high_boots.111
value 60
weight 6500
ac 1
nrof 1
resist_physical 4
type 99
material 8
editable 1024
body_foot -2
gen_sp_armour 4
editor_folder boots
end

Object low_boots
name shoes
name_pl shoes
client_type 291
face low_boots.111
value 25
weight 2000
nrof 1
ac 1
resist_physical 1
type 99
material 8
editable 1024
body_foot -2
gen_sp_armour 1
editor_folder boots
end

It looks like the bonuses are combined. I wonder what the ingame description of these items reads, it really should give players some indication that it provides ac bonus at +0 state.

So 20 - 5 +1 = 16 Here is your math :P

euh... that's not exactly my point

at first, i'm talking about 'speed boots of of steel'
speed boots: 0 ac, of steal adds 1 ac, together: 1 ac
(jack boots of steel have 2 ac, iirc)

the point is: speed boots of steel -5 (corroded) reduce the total Ac, so wearing corroded speed boots (and nothing else) makes you more vulnerable than wearing nothing!
that means nonsense to me. i do understand wearing these corroded speed boots do not give you a better Ac, but i fail to see why they make you having a worse Ac...

If I am understanding you right the question is how an item of clothing can make you have worse ac.

A possibility: The boots are corroded, this is not quite the same as having no boots at all (no protection at all), corroded may mean that there are bits of acid on them(or the boots are extremely uncomfortable to walk in) and it hurts the character o every step making it much more difficult to dodge hits and spells hence the worse ac.

Is this the sort of explanation that would make some sense? :)
