character creation

Post by Mith »

at this moment, character creation generates random numbers for str, dex, con and so on.
Random numbers tend to be random, so you cannot fit your character nicely to your preferences. This is not a big deal for an experienced player, but sometimes, newbs focus on str and con (for example) and totally lack int and wis, so they cant even learn spells, prayers and, even worse, skills!

If possible, i would suggerst a new creation system: set all stats to 10 and give the player for example 30 bonus points they can use to increase some stats as they wish (but limited to race max -3)

I think they should fist choose the characters race and get a character with all stats 10 +- race modifiers, and next the possibility to fine-tune the character by modifying stats.
Somehow it should be prevented a player turn any stat at race max (a limit of 17 or 18 - without race modifiers - would be reasonable) but no-one forbids to choose a profession with such modifiers you're at max stat.

In particular, one starts a new character. It's a 'faceless' character with all stats 10
next step would be to choose a race. If this player wants to be a fireborn, ok... his stats modify according to the stat modifier of the fireborn race.
now the character is a fireborn with:
str 5
dex 14
con 10
int 12
wis 12
pow 17
cha 8

next he's able to 'buy' 30 stat potions to fine-tune his stats. Let's assume this player wants to be a good spellcaster (hey.. thats a fireborn!) and want to be strong.
so he'll increase pow to max. this is 27 for the race, but at this point it would be 10 (start) + 7 (race) + 7 (initial limit) = 24
str would be 10 -5 + 7 = 12
and so on.

why 30 stat points?
on character creation, you _can_ (if you're lucky) have an average of 15 (without cha)
why not allow full stats?
you also have to choose a profession, that has some influence on your stats. i dont want to overrule this selection.

oh... and excuse for the long post :)

The character creation and stats allocation was brought up on the cf-devel mailing list a few days ago.

This is currently in the TODO list.

http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/c ... iew=markup
- Changing the stat generation system - instead of roll based, give some
number of points. This makes it easier for players to choose what they
want to play - otherwise, I think some clients will be written that will
do this for the players in any case.
Such a change would require server side coding updates, but also client updates/changes and HOWTO or help documentation (IMO) for the new interface.

It's a little more involved and intricate then it first appears or sounds.

FWIW, this has been the topic of discussion in the past..
