I give up

Post by Tellurian »

Due to my inability to get my poor character past level 7, I've deleted him from the metalforge server.

Every time I got to level 8, I'd end up dead, and kicked back down to level 7. With that, the windows 98 client instability (which usually resulted in the death), and the admittedly minor "randomly changing maximum hitpoints" bug, it was too much.

Feel free to tell me I'm a moron for giving up too early.

If we criticised you, you'd just leave quicker. But, if you're still reading this, we can always give you incentive to come back.

Swashbuckler Dwarf was probably not a good choice....

I beg to differ. In terms of pure physical attack, that is a nice advantage. Get yourself the 2 handed weapon skill and get a Smasher. Demons drop tons of chainmail, so we can always give you one. Those work nicely. Not to mention there is a place to buy talis and holy symbols in bulk, so that's not a real problem.

At this level, what maps are you exploring and/or monsters are you trying to fight?

So, what you are saying.. the only way to survive and succeed in this game is to hope or wait for high level players to give you powerful equipment?

Ignoring item power (or working around the item power), a player can have the best equipment in the game (rings of power, WDSM, girdle of the firegod, etc.) but if they don't know some of the basics or key tactics of the game - they are as good as dead.

For instance:

Wear or apply fire protection when fighting wyverns or red dragons. (partial resistances)

Have a spell of restoration handy or at least heal (potion, spell, wand/staff, etc.) readily available.

Hold down the control key to run while attacking instead of pounding down the individual direction keys.

Level up first in physical attacks (1h weapon, 2h weapon, clawing, karate, et al) before leveling up in spell casting - hit points come in handy when you run out of mana.

Wearing cursed items - detect curse and ID items first!

Watch your weight and inventory - all that loot adds up fast, don't carry it around with you the whole map; speed is essential.

And so on.

Since you've made it past some of the tougher levels (2-5) you are doing something right. You've just hit a tough spot; where's the right map for your level?

Actually, that is a decent choice.

Now, a Swashbuckler Dwarf with really low scores in Str and Con is another story.

No, I'm saying that because he's a humanoid, he has more item spots for future use.

It certainly isn't, but does help. But then forming a party and fighting together with similar-levelled characters can be just as useful in terms of life expectancy and more satisfying.
