I'm getting the same issue. The only thing you will get any money for in shops is gems. (Win32 1.6 Server, GTK 1.7 Client).
I've trawled through the code, and can't see any problem, but I don't have a C compiler, so have only tested the released version, and can't do comprehensive testing.

Also I can't say I've seen this building the server on Linux. Before you get too involved make sure you try the current CVS code - in many cases the bug you search for may already be fixed.
