How about adding a suspended state for characters? This is how I imagine it:
In certain situations - when the client or network connection dies or when the player requests it - would be nice to be able to 'pause' the character, so that it doesn't get killed or anything. Just imagine if you are very, very far away from any bed to reality, and you desperately need to go to toilet.... Or if your client dies in the middle of fighting a room full of monsters - this happened several time for me, and when I came back my level 10 character had been killed by ants; how embarrassing is that!
The suspended state could something like:
1. The character just hangs there, semi visible and passive. Or
2. The character becomes an NPA or monster for while, and can be killed without loss of stats. Once dead, it can't be played for a while. Or
3. The character gecomes an inanimate object that can be picked up, which could lead to some surprising situations - just imagine waking up somewhere else. Or inside another player's sack.
