The GNUniverse/GNUverse (CrossCiv (CrossCivNoth? ;)))

Post by markm »

I am working with FreeCiv and Battle for Wesnoth as well as Crossfire, and also keeping track of various free open-source systems for three-dimensional virtual worlds. At least one commercial virtual-worlds development system allows three-dimensional and two-diensional types of interface to the same worlds, but free open source stuff seems to be lagging behind in that kind of stuff.

Even the commercial ones though so far seem to be thinking of providing 2-D clients onto 3-D worlds rather than allowing 3-D clients to view and manipulate 2-D worlds or allowing the import of existing 2-D worlds such as Crossfire, Wesnoth or Freeciv worlds into a 3-D system.

Basically this is very long-term stuff toward a massively multiplayer multiverse. Under Freeciv there is a Galactic Ruleset heading toward situating multiple Freeciv worlds in one universe. Under Wesnoth there is a "Between the Worlds" add-on started to start sketching out some stuff for the Wesnoth approach, and for Crossfire work has begun on developing a "Planetary Governor's City" where rulers of Freeciv planets in the Galactic Milieu can set up embassies to implement interstellar diplomacy.

I would be working with Xconq too if it weren't that it seems to have gone on hiatus a few years back; if it gets back into compileable shape I will definitely check it out again.

Anyway, just thought that since there are threads about this GNUniverse / GNUverse idea on Freeciv and Wesnoth forums there might as well be one here too...
