Question about the "brace" command.

Post by ZirePhoenix »

I'm just curious why brace reduces my WC and AC? Other than allowing me to attack very quickly in place (combined with a run+direction), what other benefits am I missing that would warrant this penalty?

I thought that the trade-off was you would receive a bonus to your attack speed and damage.

However, a search of the mailing list archives seems to indicate this penalty was added due to abuse. People would find the right location on a map(s) and then use the brace command and mow down all monsters that approached them - the example provided in the archives talked about leaving the character logged in for the weekend and coming back to a relatively high level character.

Perhaps it would be wise to remove the 'brace' command, as it has few or now no benefits, and having a useless command is pointless.

I can't recall the last time I used it.

Does anyone actually use this command?

Honestly never even heard of it until yesterday.

I've discovered it when i was searching - but nothing on the message window. Ooops, I was inadvertently capslocked. So uncap, search, open the door, can't move and died. Then, quietly on my save bed, i've discovered in the playerbook that S was binded to brace by default.

It' a really good way to learn a key binding, I've never forgot it.

Yes, I actually use the brace command on occasion. I even have a couple of keybindings that rely on it. So, I would not like to see it go away.

I forgot about one of the other uses for the brace command - when switching from cult to another. Often times you will be pushed away or forced off the altar - if you stand on the altar and use the brace command, you won't move and will make the conversion a little quicker.

The "forced off the opposing altar" is to try and prevent players from accidently praying on an opposing altar - it gives them a chance or two (or more..) to correct that mistake.

I actually use the brace command quite a lot. It's really nice when you're doing something like holding a bunch of monsters at a doorway and don't want to end up rushing into the middle of them. Or when you're bashing down a door and don't want to end up running into the room when it gives way.
