Unless people discover a weapons with a slay ability for it :P But yeah you have a point.

What about another way to bypass the whole rod level debate?

Create rods at the minimum level for the spell that they cast.

Then have enchantment scrolls of enchant rod, that increase the level of the rod. (maybe randomly up to ~5 levels, maybe one level maybe something slightly more complicated - involving sacraficing another rod of a higher level).

This would allow players to create powerful rods, just as they can create powerful weapons currently, but they would be unable to make stupid numbers of level 110 rods.

With the initial level being quite low, the cost to create them can be lower, and the side effects more benign (at least for simple spells).

no enchant rod scrolls. bad idea. enchanting exsisting rods to over 115 would be bad. and why not just use that higher level rod then, instead of sacraficing it?

because that higher lvl rod might be a rod of an other spell...

and if it is possible to prevent armour being enchanted higher than +5, why should it be hard to prevent rods being enchanted higher than lvl 110?

i think cavesomething's idea makes sense.

i just dont like the idea of enchanting rods higher than theyre supposed to be, you should have to go to more effort to do it than just find a scroll. but maybe if you did it in a forge with a scroll instead of metalsmith skill, and have a hard as hell quest for the scroll...

actually enchanting rods would be harder than enchanting armour under this proposal, I'll show you why.

Let us assume that you create a rod of comet.

comet is a ~ lvl 20 (can't remember exactly off-hand) spell

so a rod of comet will be created at level 20.

now, to enchant it as you do with armour, you need scrolls of enchant rod

look at my earlier post, I suggested the scale of their effects to be

ok, so we have....
a) 1-5 levels (that will average 2.5 levels per scroll)
b) 1 level
c) something involving sacrificing higher level rods. (let us assume for the sake of this example that we set the rod level to the mean of the enchanted rod and the sacrificial rod (rounded down) ).

To acquire a level 110 rod then.....
a) requires on average (110-20)/2.5 = 36 scrolls
b) requires 90
c) assuming we only sacrifice lvl 110 rods, our new rod will go lvls 20-65-87-98-104-107-108-109.

this would require 7 scrolls and 7 lvl 110 rods.
even then, 109 would be the highest achievable, so those lvl 110 rods would need to be found.

Bear in mind that these scrolls would be like enchant armour scrolls, and not acquirable in unlimited quantities so not all rods would reach stupidly high levels.

but if you find a higher level rod, why not just use that one? or if its any rod, then you can just crap crappy rods like fairy fire, and use them.

I really don't see what your point is.

I believe hes asking why sacrifice lvl 110 rods to build a rod, when you already have a lvl 110

and you dont have to sacrafice a higher level enchanted armour to enchant your armour. and i would use the higher level one anyway.

woo's interpertaion is right.
