I'm inclined to agree for the most part. Something that might be interesting in that respect would be to have all magical devices double costed, so that they drain mana or charges from their own internal store /AND/ from the player.

This would make some rods unusable until odd levels, and make attunements matter for rods (presumably they shouldn't stop denied spells from being cast, so there would be a special hack in that case).

cave: no, they souldnt tap mana. that would be the only purpose of a wand or staff. rods should just be less powerfull, and have a thing like armour where you cant wear to many over enchanted items at the same time.

IMO it is a good idea to remove rods - they effectively give unlimited mana to the caster. Even the recharging time is defeated by carrying 3 rods.

I was about to say that rods for spells like town portal and dimension door should stay, as they are utility spells and can not really get abused, but then realised that players can inscribe scrolls and sell them to other players, effectively achieving the same effect, but with a cost attached, and in a more interesting way.

casper: thats why the level of the spell on the rod they can use should be enough under them that they only use it when they need small things, and dont want to waste mana, like clearing a room of goblins or skeletons, and save their mana for the dragons or beholders ahead...
