Need help setting up crossfire server

Post by Guest »

Hi...I used to play crossfire on unix computers when I was in highschool (10 years ago). I would love to set up a server on my PC (running XP) so that I could play it again with a friend.

I'm having a problem setting up the server. I downloaded "crossfire-server-2006-01-02.exe".... but during the installation it is asking for a python DLL and I don't understand where to get it or why it doesn't install it automatically.

Also, and I cannot stress this enough, I am *not* computer savvy. Feel free to hand-hold and talk to me like i'm a little kid ;)

Thanks!

I ran into a similar issue on one WinXP Home installation, but on another install - I did /not/ run into this.

Here's one way to get around the issue..

1.) Download ActivePython from http://www.activestate.com/Products/ActivePython/

2.) Follow their installation Wizard (Next, Agree, Next, Netxt, etc.)

3.) Launch/run the server
3a.) If you see the python error again, uninstall and then reinstall the Crossfire server and Maps (the server comes with an uninstall utility)

Oh yeah.. reboot when/where necessary when following the steps above..

Please post or followup to this forum thread if the problem continues or something new shows up.

Also, if you don't have Python installed (the default for XP computers), when installing the server, uncheck the "Python plugin" option - it should then stop asking for the DLL.

Note that not installing the Python plugin will disable some extended functions, which are *not* mandatory for the game.

Really?

Hmm.. I wonder how or why I had it installed on one workstation and not the other.. :?

Perhaps the server installation page should be updated to include the installation of ActivePython?

Python is a FreeSoftware, I dont really see MS having it installed by default :)

A quick tutorial to install ActivePython could be nice, but imo not required...
