Improving literacy?

Post by Pathor »

I'm at level 25 in praying and want to learn a level 22 prayer, but can't read the spellbook. I guess my literacy level is too low (level 9). Is there some way to increase the literacy level besides reading scrolls and books? I already know most spells, so it takes forever to improve the literacy by identifying scrolls/books and then reading the scrolls.
This is on a 1.6 server, if that matters.

the server version shouldnt matter, but i think its easiest to get a library card, and go through and identify all the books. wait till the map resets, then repeat. and dont die.

that will take a long time to hit level 20-odd

one approach that will help reduce that is to try and level all spell skills at a roughly equal pace, and learn as many spells as possible. - reading spell books successfully can give several thousand exp. (depending on spell level)

Also bear in mind that there are many places besides libraries where lots of written material can be found.

Anyone recall when Ryo_ made changes to how experience is gained for some of the skills?

You basically received more exp for some of the harder to level skills such as literacy, lock picking, etc. I wonder if this server has that change in place?

(Grr.. if I could only get the cvs2cl to xml to html scipt to work..)

I changed exp for inscription skill only. I didn't change lockpicking, or disarm, or literacy, or anything else.

For inscription, my change was to give ( inscription xp * level / 2 ) (iirc) instead of ( inscription xp ). This made leveling easier, instead of plain impossible.

inscription is too easy to level though, you just need lots of scrolls to write on, and a script to dump project gutenburg (or some other corpus of text) into them.

Well, all non combat skills are easy to level into... hiding, alchemy, and so on.

Have you try leveling hiding past level 20 or lockpicking past 7 recently? Or am I missing something?
