how do you read? close combat guide, and binary bible?

Did you happen to pick barbarian as your class?
You'll need to find or buy a scroll of Literacy and then apply it (middle click) and hope you succeed (you'll want a high INT to improve thos chances). The scrolls can be purchased from the Post Office in Scorn, or they appear randomly in stores and dungeons.
