how do i pick up stuff in a pile

i droped 2 dragon scales on the anvil and got 2 shilds how do i pick up only 1?and not both?

If in the GTK client:
Look up above the invintory, at the little 'number selector' thing that's currently at "0", adjust that to the number you want to pickup. It being at 0 means pickup all. The same thing affects droping too

Other option which works in all clients:
Type a command along these lines "pickup 1 <name>" where <name> is the name of the sheild item you are rerfering to.

Also note, the pickup and drop commands are also very smart in many other ways, such as this works "drop cursed" and it drops all items identified as cursed

yes, other useful ones there are
drop - to drop all items with negative bonuses
drop of often these are artifacts or similar
drop )( which drops all items with multiple properties (that are probably worth a look at individually....)
