Hi All,
I was trying to install the Windows Crossfire Client on my son's computer. I installed the GTK that the client pointed me to. It is a Windows XP SP2 machine will all updates. Just like the one I am using now. The Client loads but when I press a number (server) to connect to, it errors giving an exception/access violation error. Has anyone else seen this? I tried removing both the client and GTK and re-installing both. Same Problem. I tried turning everything off in the config of the client, still same problem.
Getting Error when trying to connect to a server?

Bort: Why? The opengl client is an unofficial unmaintained one that doesn't work nearly as well in many cases. Because it's a completly different client with not too much shared code, it probably wouldn't work, but from my experience that client is not usable.
HolyKnight: What version of gtk? 2.6 is known to have problems under windows.

Wow. Quick response guys. Anyway, I am running gtk-runtime-2.6.7-rev-a of GTK. I made sure that the windows firewall is off and that the Services that are on match my other Windows XP SP2 machine. They do.
The Error is this.
GTKClient.exe: GTKClient.exe - Application Error
X The instruction at "0x005b5ea0" referenced memory at "0x43082604". The memory could not be "written".
Hmmmm.. Sounds like something is taken the same memory allocation as the GTKClient.

Yes. This is a known issue with GTK 2.6 under windows
Use GTK 2.4 as shown in this installation guide: http://crossfire.real-time.com/clients/ ... html#howto
Note to the website admins for crossfire.real-time.com: I find I'm having to rerfer people to this link an awful lot, perhaps it should be linked to in a more evident place on the main page.
Ryo (for those who don't know, the person who makes the windows builds): Perhaps it would be good if you could have the installer check that it's a known working version of gtk it's being installed with.

I've seen the OpenGL client work on windows when GTK+- was not usable..Rednaxela wrote:Bort: Why? The opengl client is an unofficial unmaintained one that doesn't work nearly as well in many cases. Yes!!!
Rednaxela-
Yes. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You. The 2.4 of GTK does work. This is where I got it http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/gimp ... p?download.

Thanks for your help, too. The OpenGL does work. However, I agree with Rednaxela. The OpenGL looks bad and has bugs. One big bug is it loses focus and I have to ALT-TAB back and forth to get it Active again. Yuck.
If anyone is interested, I saw a Java client to download, too. Ummm.. I would rate them this way for the Windows clients starting 1 being the best and 3, well, would use as a last resort.
1) GTK Client.
2) OpenGL Client. <- Had problems losing focus. Had to ALT-TAB.
3) Java Client. <- Missing A LOT over the GTK Client.

I agree. On the error slash screen, when installing the client, it should not direct you to the latest 2.6 GTK for windows users. It should refer you to the GTK project downloads and say that know issue with 2.6 GTK tested and works with 2.4 GTK.Rednaxela wrote-
