http://www.metalforge.net/metaserver/ is the list of public servers as of about 3 weeks ago, most should still be up. (cat2 and metalforge certainly are)
As for how many private servers there are, the answer is that there are some, but no one person knows how many or where.
I can tell you for certain that the minimum is 1 (I run one intermitently for testing things), and that the maximum is the total number of downloads here http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... e_id=15919 plus the number of co's from CVS plus the number distributed by various distros, and other people.
if we take downloads of the server since the 1.4.0 release alone, that is 4132 copies.
I am however somewhat doubtful that all of these are running as private servers.

I agree completely, but it is not easy to see what can be done about that.pelican wrote:i feel that crossfire is a nice mmorpg considering it is a opensource.
but there seems to have too little players.
There are a few minor issues with internet play outstanding, the death of the metaserver is one of those, some obscure networking bugs are another as is loading of stupidly large maps.
They will get fixed, so will a few other things regarding information display (look at Tchize's new login window in the CVS gtk client for example)
There are a few balancing issues (but they will always be there to some extent) and a few bits that need tweaking, but other than that, the main need is for map makers. How to do that is an interesting issue in itself.
Nonetheless, this is still a 'build it and they will come' approach. There are places where a more active approach is being taken, TechII has been trying to get a properly used .desktop file in the tarball, which should increase the number of idle installs through the packaging system by click-and-drool-ites leading to running the game and connecting to a server (whether this is a good thing is debatable).
There is also - vaguely - an effort to spa^H^H^H ... influence the sf stats system, with the hope of putting cf top of the RPG list (look at eracc's CVS commits in the last 3 days or so.... ).
Look at the spread crossfire post in general chat from a few months back for other examples. Once I actually get my main computer working, the one that is actually capable of installing stuff, then I will also be looking at creating arch and/or slackware packages, which should further help things along.
excellent, that's one fewer who needs to be.... convincedpelican wrote: anyway, i like crossfire

i assume crossfire have a large base of user, whether developer, mappers or players but this forum is not really very active.
from the bottom, it shows the most visitors to this board is 11 people concurrently.
not that this forum doesnt have informative posts, but if there are more it would be better. there are many stuff that i wanted to know which cant be found in the main website. i thought i could come here to search... but no matter how i search... i cant find the answer...
then the next alternative, subscribing to mailing list... not really much help.
i almost give up and wanted to switch to running normal text mud... but i think i will persist for a little...

Try #crossfire on irc.freenode.net
Edit:
If you don't know how to use irc, use somthing like "xchat" or "irssi".
In xchat type "/join #crossfire" to join the channel
Edit2:
You can usualy get more help there.
Edit3:
err, changing "here" to "there"

Well. irc is the place with the most activity out of all of thempelican wrote:irc is the only place is the only place i havent been to.
thanks.

(though there's sometimes some offtopicness)
The conversation on IRC consists of: development conversation, offtopic conversation, a little gameplay discussion that isn't dev related, and the occasional person new to the game who know how to use IRC looking for help.
Also, on IRC I have a bot that's on both the metalforge server and IRC to allow messages to be exchanged between the two. It's not widely used, but you may as well know about it (username on crossfire for the bot is "redbot", IRC nick for the bot is "commbot")
