Losing progress when you die - bad bad bad

Post by guest »

Game console designers discovered they drove off their clientele if they punished players for dying with loss of experience and characteristics. What has worked? losing gold and inventory.

It's extremely frustrating to work for an hour to get to level N, to die, and be set back to start over again!

If some players like the old way, then make it a server option.

The way the game is balanced atm, losing inventory would be seen as /worse/ by most players than losing exp.

Not enough players carry most of their wealth around with them to make losing gold/plat an issue either.

Personally, I would favour death causing the loss of inventory items, IMHO there aren't enough item removal options in the game at the moment.

However merely by suggesting this, I will get pounced on by the levelling TC scummers.

I think it would be nice to be able to configure it for individual servers.
Maybe not a loss of inventory items, but an explosion of inventory items, like say,
diablo. Or better maybe, leave your corpse on the ground, and increase the reset time of the map a certain amount to let you recover it, if you don't get there in time, it explodes, tossing items everywhere, which can then be gotten by other players.

Dying should hurt IMHO, makes you not want to die :).

As it is dying does hurt abit.
All this perhapse should be configurable?

Also note, perm exp makes it hurt less (set on Cat2, I think on MF aswell?)

I am not (anyore) a tc scummer ;) though I dont like this idea... Not because I think it is bad per se, but as stated now, I consider it to be bad. Special artifacts - like a cloak of Magic Resistance, a White Dragon Scale Mail, a cloak of the Underworld and such - shouldn't get lost. They are either too rare or too hard to get (in other words: they are irreplaceable)

some of these items also have the no-steal flag set, i think its sane not to let no-steal items go into oblivion. At least, you dont want someone with a WDSM to die somewhere, and someone else takes this WDSM - thats against the spirit of the WDSM, assumed that it has one ;)

So, losing items: yes please, losing all items: no
Maybe allow a player to mark some items 'cannot lose'

or rather: sum ergo bibendi

finnaly give sacks a use for not just carrying around items. stuff in a sack wont fall out, but it does take a while to find and equip. armour shouldnt fall off your body, or else its fairly useless. you probably wont drop rings or aumlets either, but you will most likely lose your weapon and shield when you die. but then you dont have your equipment, so your probably cant get back to where you were, or it takes too long to do it (heaven/hell) and if town portals are nerfed, noone will ever be able to get back a sword they lost at the bottom of hell. and if they cant find the map again, its also lost. the xp and skill loss is bad enough, we dont need to throw our equipment all over the dungeon when we die. and for noobs, theyll probably be surrounded, and never able to get thier stuff back, because theyre now weaponless, with no money for a life potion or new equip, and stuck outside the map, cause if they go in, theyll die...

I don't know if anyone here has played runescape, if not then it isn't really worth wasting your time on, but it does have a way of coping with death that is interesting, if you die you lose all bar the 3 most valuable items you have equiped. They drop to the floor.

In CF there are other things that should not be lost, all invisible items would need to be kept, as would all items of type key (otherwise an ill-advised quest undertaken by a guild could leave them all locked out, though that would be quite funny....)
No steal items would seem to fall into this category too, although they should probably count towards such a limit.

Which is where they try and recuit a higher level (or even similar level) character to help them.
I don't consider this a bad thing, in fact it could add quite an interesting slant to the game.

Obviously this would be something that people playing on private servers would want to turn off....

Lava floors would suck though, it might make everyone less tempted to try scumming the Demon TC.

Likewise fire and ice creatures would be fearsome things again.
