Because I happened to be bored, I decided to determine how many maps there were in each part of the world, to allow the overloadedness or otherwise of various maps to be determined.

Code: Select all

maps-bigworld $for i in $(ls); do if [ -d $i ];then cd $i; echo $i $(find . | xargs grep "arch map" | wc -l); cd..; fi; done | sort -nrk 2
world 900
pup_land 383
styles 339
scorn 217
brest 147
quests 145
unlinked 93
navar_city 84
lake_country 81
darcap 63
santo_dominion 58
wolfsburg 57
dragonisland 35
port_joseph 34
editor 30
test 29
sisters 21
euthville 20
dungeons 15
inn_and_outpost 13
templates 11
planes 11
marksel 8
Info 4
start 2
under_world 1
python 0
debian 0
crow 0
CVS 0
To my mind there are 2 things that stand out;

1) why is crow still a directory in maps-bigworld?
2) if navar is supposed to be a starting city to rival scorn then it has surprisingly few maps. counting linked maps as well,

scorn has 217+383(pupland)+35(stoneville)+58(santo dominion)+34(port joesph) = 727

navar has 84+63(darcap)+57(wolfsburg - since this week)=204

IIRC, the directory used to contain the Training Center maps. The TC maps were moved to the scorn/ directory and removing/deleting a cvs directory on SF isn't easy.

:o

Umm.. Scorn has had 12+ years of development, Navar has only had ~2-3 years of development.

That'd be because I don't know where they are (and this after playing the game for a year.) :)

As it is the figures are out of sync with CVS now, mlab has been removed from scorn, it is now down to 159 maps. which makes the total, even with euthville, 689

OTOH navar has, within the last day, gained 5 maps (apartments and building shop) making 209.

If/when mlab is connected to navar, it may well start to rival scorn for number of maps. (this also suggests that the secondary entrance to mlab should be in brest and not scorn).

The secondary entrance is only useable by people who have made it to CityDeClouds and have bought the 9kdiamond pass.

I was thinking of putting a 3rd such entrance in Brest.

scorn is supposed to be newbieville. An entrance to one of the most extensive high-level areas in the game seems somewhat out of place there. Brest has high level maps, navar has some. Scorn has the TC (and that should budge/be split) and the top of valriel's temple (which should be in the cathedral in navar).

nope
that cathedral is Mostrai's
putting Heaven right there is nonsense

(and i also disagree with removing all high lvl maps from scorn. there must be a way a newb can die)

Animal quaratine can quite happily kill anyone under level 20, but it isn't scum-worthy, as the TC and the random angel map is.

newbs can die against skeletons quite happily if they try up to about level 5-8. against wyverns, panthers, skulls etc, quite a bit higher.

The old city quest of scorn really wants about level 20.

But, and this is the crucial point, the old city quest in scorn is the biggest quest there, it should be the hardest, a test for if you can actually cope outside of scorn.

Any player who has done the old city quest should feel that most of the maps in scorn are now slightly too easy. They should be right, the TC and the random angel map give reason to stay beyond that, therefore, they should be moved elsewhere.

So It's a month since this subject was last looked at, I figure that with the moving of mlab tavern, it's about time to update these figures

Code: Select all

maps-bigworld $for i in $(ls); do if [ -d $i ];then cd $i; echo $i $(find . | xargs grep "arch map" | wc -l); cd..; fi; done | sort -nrk 2
world 900
pup_land 383
styles 339
scorn 163
brest 147
quests 145
navar_city 142
unlinked 93
lake_country 81
darcap 63
santo_dominion 58
wolfsburg 57
dragonisland 35
port_joseph 34
editor 30
test 29
sisters 21
euthville 20
dungeons 15
inn_and_outpost 13
templates 11
planes 11
marksel 8
Info 4
teamarena 2
start 2
under_world 1
python 0
debian 0
crow 0
CVS 0
totals:

scorn - 163+383+35+58+34+20 = 693
navar - 142+63+57 = 262

something of an improvement, at this rate the two towns will be equal in map count in about 5 months.....

Isn't crow the map maker who like mlab didn't like heriarchical map locations within directories? /unlinked/<dev_name> in maps is a convenient way for map developers to make sure their work survives through hardware failures etc. and to ensure that if they give up before finishing someone else can take over their work and finish it. I guess when TCs were finished they were no longer unlinked as such...
