favourite cities

Post by cavesomething »

Given the general lack of posts over the last couple of days, and mikee's new style patches that are slowly wending their way into CVS, it seems apropos to ask where everyone likes to go in the world, and why.

Scorn, as it's by far the most practical to be based in. However the citydeclouds would likely top it if you count updates in MLAB that haven't made it to CVS/MF yet.

I have thought, and still do think, that the nicer way to deal with storage is to shift it over to the bank system, so that as well as an account, there would be a vault, in which you could store items, and retrieve them from any other bank. (at a cost of course)

If only I knew python....

As far as i understand the 'bank like system' you suggest, it would be fine for things you want to have access to without carrying them.

i dont think - if thats what you want - this should replace appartment storage, for the bank like system is not very fast (you cant just go and grab, it takes some time) and it is not half as ordered as an appartment can be (i know, some players make a mess in their appartments)

for three reasons i think the bank system wont replace appartment story (when they coexist)
- its not fast
- it cost money
- its not well-organized (i suppose its not possible to walk trough your bank storage when you need an item)

to solve the problem i sketched, i see three options:
1) having a big appartment in every (cluster of) city(ies)
2) appartment interconnects (and for some reason i think you really dislike this idea)
3) dont remove the interconnects and dont nerve word of recall

personally, i prefer 3)

well... that solves the problem... (not)

if you remove all these things virtually everyone will settle himself in scorn, because BREST, NAVAR, ... HAVE NO APPARTMENTS (i used caps to emphasis the problem we discuss now)

well if mikee's modification to the training centre are made, and the map at the top of valriel's temple in scorn were moved to navar/brest, then players would quickly /have/ to move away from scorn, because there would be no nice ways to level there....

dont get me wrong, i think its good when players have to move around, but i also think it shouldnt be that a player has to base in Navar/Brest/..., while there is no appartment in Navar/Brest/... that can compare with scorn appartment.

So, scorn would be fine for players until lvl 10-12, then they are forced (by ways of experience) to move around, buying a new appartment in 'somewhere else' that is big enough to contain their 'stuff'.

This repeats a few times until they have appartments in all cities, then they can choose where to settle (at some time, its no more fun to gain more lvls ;))

ATM i wont move out of Scorn (that is: not permanent) because
1) (almost) all other players are in scorn
2) only scorn apartment is big enough to have my stuff sorted in a more or less appropriate way
3) except for Neurmberg appartment, all other appartments are one-map appartments. If i drop all my stuff on one map, loading that map would cause bad lag to others (hence i need scorn appartment)
4) scorn (appartment) has good connections to the most interesting parts of the world (lake country and pupland).

mostly for reasons 2) and 3) i will never move out of scorn unless other cities have appartments that are at least as good as scorns

I suggested that before and cavetroll even made a hyperspace-like map for a trial.

Yes, well, that is a circular arguement...
its not a circular argument, its a fact ;)
and its even a fact that is self-sustaining
cavesomething wrote: I'm not quite sure how bad the lag issue actually is, either way that is a problem for the map loading code (AFAICT there is some quirkyness with containers...)
quite bad.
I think something is changed in scorn sale, but a few weeks ago it literally took seconds to load the map when the shop was crowded (and swapped out)
During these seconds not only the player entering that map couldnt move, but no other players could.

For the second floor in the shop is still a mess (i assume) you should be able to reproduce it by entering the second floor (at metalforge)

sometimes, when a player enters the game (or his appt) the game freezes for a second (or more) too. usually this is fixed when the player cleans his appt

Yes, but I want to get rid of the lake country and brest portals and replace them with ones to lone town and santo dominion.

Darcap already has portals to navar and high mountain village, arguably it should have one to wolfsburg added too.

There are already the pshops in brest, so probably lake country is a saner place to have an apartment down there?

This would give three main 'regions' to the world - the west/northwest, the east/northeast and the south/southwest.

South east is still relatively unoccupied but mikee's new icecave maps should take care of that...
Basically, you're planning on regions and Super Regions?

I think there is not much use for a portal to santo dominion and lone town, there are dragon transports and ships.
And i also think Darcap is FAR away from Navar. i dont want it into isolation, but maybe it should have its own SuperRegion

i made a little worldmap divided in SuperRegions:
Red are the regions you suggested (except that Darcap has its own region) and the cyan regions are not yet existing regions. (they might even remain empty for years

I am still planning on a set of maps in the center of the world (in the mountains south of the valley of the three sisters) but i fear this will be a long term plan. Making maps eats a lot of time ;)
