The question is will crossfire EVER have tradeskills such as smithing, mining, cooking, fire making(to cook with),tree cutting(to cut the tree to start the fire to cook with), and fletching(bowmaking).

Isn't there fletchery skill or something like that? But yeah, I agree that the players should be able to create all kinds of items..

It'd be cool if shops started empty and would only sell items that players have sold to them. :)

Learning to forge good weapons takes a lot of time and practice. Time that a hero does not have. Remember that CF is role playing. The only way this migh make sense is if CF allowed players to abandon adventuring and creating a small shop. This might be interesting to heroes who have reached lvl 110 and cannot become more powerful as heroes. The same of course holds for most of the suggested skills, except cooking maybe, but that seems to be a very minor skill. One should always keep in mind that becoming a professional in something is always a full time job and leaves no time for adventuring.

Nevertheless this would need a great lot of redesign of the engine and there seem to be many more urgent things to do than that.

This is existing functionality. Alchemy was extended to include many different containers such as a forge, a stove, a jewlers desk, a tanning table... There are buildings in Scorn which allow you to do this... What version are you folks playing? Actually there is a more extensive object building system in the game just waiting for more item graphics to be made...

For "not so useful skills", like skills that are designerd to spend spare time when you are boored of "just hack and slash", I was the first promoter.
I wrote an extensive drafth on how to implement fishing in cf, but since I can't code it, it is still an abandoned dock on the mailing list. If you want a copy leave your mail.
Codeers are needed for such "non essential" skills, main coders are all down making important parts of code.
Fishing was the first of my list, I never continued because I cannot code that.

Avion the smithing that comes with the game totaly sucks what I am talking about is the SKILL an example would be go to a mine and use your mining skill to mine iron ore then go to a smelter and smelt it using your smithing skill them smith it into say a shield or sword using your smithing skill and the more you use them the more exp you get in them then you can make better and different things.

ALSO about it only being fun for high levels if anyone here has EVER played ultima online they will know that even total noobs can become an exceptional smith and then make some really fancy weapons for themselves and perhaps sell what they make to amass a fortune to buy magic armor or somthing like that.

Cheers ALL,

No, that's the sort of thing I am talking about. .. It works like an extended version of alchemy and uses those skills I mentioned and the new cauldron objects. You can take certain raw materials (a 'recipe')and use the appropriate skill and cauldron to build swords, shields, potions, clothes, amulets and such.
As for mining and the like - well that's tied into economy arguments isn't it. That's an old and ongoing discussion.

Images needed?

Post by GrandmasterZar »

What images are needed exactly? Can you post a list of what is needed, so that someone could volunteer to do them if there is a lack of manpower. My brother, ketche, has some skill at making images.

What do you want to make? I think that the developer is looking for everything from hammer and nails to an axolytol tank. Contact the garbled one on irc for a list of stuff he needs. A good start would be images for your different natural resources, like ingots, logs...

OK, you want to know what is needed? Here we go:

Need an image for every type of raw material. Silver ingots, platinum, raw iron, raw steel, raw admantium. All ofthe materials, not just the steels either, we need piles of logs to do the various woods, heaps of cloth, various animal pelts, etc. Look at the materials file in lib for a complete list of materials. Do we need a unique image for each and every one? Doubtful.. the steel image could probably be re-used for iron. You cuold probably get away with 2-3 wood images, etc etc.

Tools. Need a variety of craft tools. Awls, hammers, shears, sewing needles, ball peen hammers, tongs, whiddling knives, saws, rasps, files, planers, drills. Anything you can think of.

Build facilities. Anvils, bowyer stands, forges, vices, looms, leather stretching forks, etc etc. Things that you would use your tools with.

The basic premise of the system is, you take your tool, you stand on a build facility, and you work your raw materials. So, for example, to make a sword:

You take your pile of gold, stand on the forge, and use your smithing hammer. You pound away and poof, gold sword.

You want to make a rabbithide armour? Stand on the.. I dunno.. whatever.. hold your shears and break out the rabbit parts.

So what we need are plausible combinations of items to create other tiems. At this point I'm only looking at armour and weapons (including bows). As time goes on, it can easily be extended to other things, with the addition of more graphics.

Most importantly, I require an image of a very large forge. This is supposed to be a deconstruction device. Where you put a gold sword in, and get raw gold back out. It should be big, impressive looking, and look very magical, perhaps with electricity zapping all around it.
