low cost thinkpads do not exist - except second hand thinkpads.

if you want a new laptop, try an asus or acer centrino laptop.
at least, do not buy a laptop with a P4(-mobile). both centrino/p-mobile and AMD xp-mobile is much better than a p4-mobile

700 euro is the bottom limit - but i have no idea about USA prices.
(note: 700 euro is including 19% vat, makes around 600 euro without)

Used on ebay maybe. That is where I tell people on a budget to get a laptop. Some friends of mine got a Thinkpad for their daughter off ebay for around $500/US. Probably a little more than that but I know it was under $600/US.

If you are going for a second hand laptop then you should maybe be somewhat careful. My laptop is an antique second-hand compaq armarda. It is horrible to use, heavy, kludgy, with dismal power saving support. Casper has an AJP laptop that has hopeless reliability and performance (and sketchy hardware support).

I have become convinced it isn't just me, and that X86 laptops are trouble, I have never yet seen one working completely correctly.

Given a choice for everyday prodction/work usage I would go for a sparc laptop. They are rare and expensive but I have an automatic bias towards sun hardware. Sparcs are hardware done right. (just as Solaris is unix done wrong, but that is what debian is for

Failing that I have heard good things about powerbooks, never used one myself, but they look pretty enough. I don't know how second-hand prices are likely to compare though.

(I still want to get an amiga 600 to convert into a laptop though (suzanne), playing cannon fodder on a laptop would be awesome, but my A500 has a numberpad, making it too large to do that.(plus some of the leads are broken, but that is another matter))

If you want a new laptop, be prepared to spend $500-$600 minimum. I hear Great Quality is making linux laptops running on an AMD Athlon.
