First off.. I hardly ever see anyone using wands/rods.. Somehow this should change.. They should become more valuable! People may use them early on, but once you get passed certain levels, you hardly look at a staff (unless it's something like preceive self)..
I propse two things:
1) Allow wands and staffs and rods to be recharged.. Could either fully charge a wand or break it... Depending on some statistics..
2) Allow for wands/staffs/rods to carry more charges, and make them a bit more powerful than someones spell at the same level.. At the same time, make them a bit more rare...
Perhaps #2 could be accomplished, instead of modifying existing stuff's, adding new rare items that do #2 and #1..
It would also be nice if a spellcaster of higher level could create staffs, rods and wands..
Recharge skill for those hard-to-loose wands..

I agree with wands being nearly useless. I don't remember ever using one myself. I don't know what should be done about it, though..
I think so too. I like the idea of players being able to create many kind of items. Perhaps they should be able to make wands that area as powerful as their spells?Zortan wrote:It would also be nice if a spellcaster of higher level could create staffs, rods and wands..

(maybe late for the topic, but well)
I think there is a spell to recharge, no? Like 'charging', or something like that.
Also, if i remember correctly, one major drawback of wands/rods/... is that you don't get the experience for the kills. (i think it's this way, but not 100% sure, maybe someone else knows?)
The reason i think is pretty simple: once you know the spell, it's easier to use it than use a wand/rod...
For the same reason i don't use many scrolls (though i try to change that, since it avoids using gr/sp)

xp
Right, rods, wands, staffs, horns, scrolls etc. don't give xp.
(well, the actual reading of a scroll gives literacy xp, but not any additional xp if something gets killed by the scrolls effects)
And that is at least why I don't pay any attention to staves and such.
Perhaps they should be a little harder to use and then they could give xp?

It's impossible to make anything foolproof, because fools are so igenious.
You can recharge wands, (and rods don't run out of charges...)
Wands, scrolls and such are supposed to be for people who can't cast spells or have low magic points. I think the problem here is more that everyone can cast spells more than it is that wands and scrolls need to be made more powerful. The whole game is out of balance in this regard IMHO - it is too easy to get powerful magic - everyone is a skilled magician sooner rather than later. Hopefully this is fixed somewhat with the new skills - then many players will be using wands and scrolls more to supliment their magic skills.

Re: xp
Yes, it really sucks that they don't give xp. As a low level character I usually use wands/rods to "soften" targets, then use my few sp/gp for the kill. One gets really mad when they die too soon and one doesn't get any xp at all. I don't think they have to be harder to use just to give xp, they are quite equal to casting spells. Rods take a while to regenerate, staffs/wands run of charges (so one needs scrolls of charging which seem pretty rare).Arselspark wrote:Right, rods, wands, staffs, horns, scrolls etc. don't give xp.

But anyway, I use a rod all the time with my 108/108/108 dragon. Not for its spell effects, but for its bonuses...
