Godly retribution kills...

Post by Azriel »

Yesterday, i thought that godly retribution was much too extreme. Now i think it's pure nonsense. It seems that godly restributin killed me between 5 and 17 times in 1 second ! I lost 5 billion xp for really nothing : i was just moving around with plenty of grace and then Whammm.

And there is nothing to do... You spend hours and hours and hours gaining xp, and you lose everything in a half a second, without any monster in the level... That's REALLY not normal. Further more, as it already happened to me, i was VERY careful with my Gr level and always move with positive Grace.

Az.

PS : As i am clearly victim of injustice (or something like a bug : the gravestone says 'killed by .') can i have my xp back ?

Hi Az,

I'll copy this to the crossfire-devel list for you. Will try to put replies back here (no promises though). I recommend subscribing to the list if you have not yet done so.

Thanks ! I read the list, maybe i can subscribe...

After (long  ) calculation based on the percentage of xp i lost, it seems i died 6 times. As for my xp, i don't want xp for xp, just to change my focus (and i need 8,4 billion to reach next level, but that's another problem).

It was brought up in IRC that spell failure effects should check and see if the square is damned, if it is then the godly retribution or mana backlash stops.

I'll post this followup to the list, as well.

The following change has been made with the server code:
server/player.c:
Insert force into the player when they die making them immune to any spells on the space they reappear on - this prevents multiple deaths if there is large spell effect going on in the savebed location. Duration of force should be long enough for most spells to run their course, but no so long that the player can use it for much of an advantage (plus, killing yourself to get such an advantage seems odd, and the force only makes the player immune to the attacktypes currently on the space)

the force doesnt last long enough, if you ask me.
i wrote some scrolls of meteor swarm, started a new char and gave him those scrolls.
After killing a kobold, i bought an appartment and applied to a bed, after coming back in the game, i used a scroll (just besides the bed) and got killed, as expected.

the result:

burn_me killed burn_me with fireball (pk).
burn_me killed burn_me with fireball (pk).
burn_me killed burn_me with fireball (pk).
burn_me killed burn_me with fireball (pk).

he got killed 4 times, so the force did quite some work (without force, it would have been 40 times at least)

now consider godly retribution lasts much longer than meteor swarm - at least i have the idea it does. so players deaths are reduced, but they will still die many times.
4 deaths result in 0.75^4 = 0.31 remaining xp (ok, i didnt calculate with permxp, so the player might still have around 40% of his before-death xp

anyway, my concusion would be: godly retribution near last savebed still kills you enough times to be at perm xp (except if you disconnect really fast)

It seems that everybody tries to find ways such that Godly Retribution only kills once.

I have a better idea : JUST REMOVE THIS STUPID FEATURE.

And for meteor swarm, well, 4 times is not so much ...

personally, i agree with that. but for its still in the game, developers apparently dont. thats why i try to reduce the effect as much as possible :)

oh, dont bind invoke commands, might be usefull!

If you think of grace as a measure of your favor with your god, then goly retribution is what happens when you neglect to pray to your god and continue asking for his favors over and over and over...

In some schools of thought trying to cast spells once you are exhausted of mana should result in a mana backlash of some kind - or perhaps begin casting spells using your HP to cast them which would finally resutl in your HP reaching 0/death

I think that stopping godly retribution to only kill you once shoudl suffice, and I believe there is a patch in place for testing and it may have already made it to CVS I'm not sure.
