melee vs mage

I had played this likea year or 2 ago.
Back then if you wanted to survive you had to pretty much be a spell caster. Melee just took too long to kill the monsters. Is this still the case?

Short answer: No.

Longer answer:
These days to survive you need to be a good at everything character. You can be just a caster and do well, and you can be just a fighter and still do well.

For example try a dragon, it has clawing that will tear most enemies of your level in no time! just run into your enemies and watch your xp go up... and your hp go down...

Higher level and more speed and tactics, the better.
Practical Answer:
Always know when to run.....

Just an answer: Train on a high level, then work on melee, and at the same time level prayer and spells.

Spell delay always makes me envy the dragons, but likely, they have their own problems as well.

Why? The skill meditation makes up for any race, really. And yes, Dragons do have problems, like humanoids with perfect equipment.

Spell delays are not that bad, if you have a descent sp regen rate or give up melee and rp a monk-spellcaster, this is actually quite a challenge, to not be a dragon and give up weapons for spells.

As long as you have access to powerful spells, it doesn't really matter. Meteor Swarm is an example of one such spell. FoD is another. Still waiting for the Ice based meteor swarm like.

Bah! This is not really a whine post about how massively overpowered meteor swarm is, but hey, why not make it one
Since it got tweaked up I have trouble living though my own one not talking about someone's ghost chasing you with it
