Country on "who" / Should player ip be hidden?

Post by hoxu »

For those who are curious just like me it'd be nice if "who" showed the country the player is from. The server could make a hostname lookup and translate the extension to a country (if it's not org, com, etc)

I would prefer having the IP hidden to non-DM players.

I think country is a personal information about a player, revaling it against his voluntarity is not rigth.
I'm not favorable to this.
You can just ask and if he want he will say you.

I don't think any personal information shouild be available to other players. Possibly even the DMs should not have access to IPs (only server admin..) I think the IPO scripts do this actually, come to think of it, and they probably shouldn't....

With the current system that shows players' ips it is possible to find this out.

I see no reason why the IP shouldn't be visible to players - there is no security issues behind that point.

Besides that, I'm against something displaying your country, either. If you want to know that, just ask the player. We shouldn't start promoting such nationalist aspects into Crossfire - it doesn't bring anything to the gaming fun, and has nothing to do with gameplay.

The IP should be hidden. I don't like to reveal my IP if I don't have to.
It's enough the server knows about that.
IP-adresses shouldn't be public.

If you are in need of the country or other personal info.
Why not ask the player? He might like you and tell you...

How about adding a location feild to the PC's settable by the player, and the who function can show this value (possibly) instead of the ip.

besides, a lookup would only slow things down.

A list of the 150+ countries around the world and I choose to set Kenya instead of Canada. I think noone is particular intressted in knowing such facts.

It would be far more fun to read about the character created. A history of the character. Why it's in the world of Crossfire. What personal goals is the character aiming at? What drives the character to slay certain monsters and so on.

If I'm to contact a player in his/her country I can politely ask for the adress through chat-windows or similar.
