the skill karate

Post by Scofield »

I noticed this evening that my Weapon Class didn't change when using the karate skill and I donned my shield. Shouldn't your 2 hands do less damage, or have less skill in creating said damage when 1 is encumbered by holding a shield? The handbook defines weapon class as "How skilled the characters melee/missile attack is. Lower values indicate a more potent, skilled attack."
I suppose it could be said that karate is a martial art involving other objects as well as your physical body, hence the shield would fit right in line with no Wc alteration ... but then you're using the shield as a one-handed weapon ... and there's a skill for that already. My suggestion is that your Wc should increase (be of a higher value/less skilled) when you're using Karate and are encumbered by a shield as well as a possible damage decrease as well.

by the same line of reasoning wc should decrease whilst using a shield with a one handed weapon surely?

Karate

I'm not sure thats the same line of reasoning at all. Karate should be predicated on the free use of both hands as it is a skill that is most effective when both hands are used - and when one is encumbered it's Wc effectiveness should be diminished.
A one-handed weapon is already based on just one hand, and whether the other hand is in your pocket, holding a shield, or smoking a cigarette, the weapon class shouldn't be affected because it only relies on the one hand which uses the weapon ... the other hand is immaterial with regards to the one handed weapon skill. Thats just my opinion though ...

I take it you have never held a real metal shield.

Try holding one up (even this is fairly difficult) and then tell me that it would be just as easy to swing a sword as without it.

As an additional extra, try wearing chain mail while you do so. Trust me when I say that the speed limitations on the heavier armours in crossfire are substantially less than in real life. I recall scarcly being able to walk (let alone at any speed) last time I wore chain mail. Running was completely out of the question.

I meant, in real life. In real life, i suppose that i could not fight with a sword, a mithril chain mail and a metal shield... But i guess that my strenght stat is around 5....

I meant in real life too... cavesomething is a big hairy creature that lives in a cave. Prefers to fight with a big heavy club, as opposed to the new sword thingies some people have invented. It may be a bit slow, but it gets the job done.

As for armour, who needs armour? Stay far enough away from enemies that are bigger than you and you won't need it, right?

This is true, mostly because mithril isn't real....
