Howdy everyone.
I tried to use the *newish GTK client today with little success.
I'm still running Win98 and it seemed quite unstable. I never could get the sound to work - I had read that it was disabled in the 2003 but that it would be restored in a future release. It would crash whenever I would walk over a pile of things on the ground (as few items as 5 sometimes), or when I'd walk into a graphics-heavy area like the store just north of the apartments in scorn. The last time it crashed I recorded the error -
library::Gdk-Warning gdkgc-win32.c RestoreDC failed
library::Gdk-Warning gdkgc-win32.c:(I forget the number): SaveDC failed
It's too bad that a stable client can't be designed because I really miss playing Crossfire and wonder how many others have encountered these same problems and have gone elsewhere. I realize that it's not as easy as it sounds but ... the game is a great idea and could be very popular.
I used it on an unstable win98 system. I supposed SE will have no problems with it. You can also look for the java client (old/deprecated) or the DX client (removed, deprecated).
I could never get the openGL client to run on windows 98/ME or I would have suggested it to Scofield in the past. If you managed to get it to run on a windows 9x kernel please post how so that others can run it as well.
What is your configuration, you and Scofield? There is a possiblity that one of my configuration tweaks makes it different. I Reinstalled gl drivers with dlls from an 2000 system. Don't know why it worked, but it worked, and thats what matters.

It's the opengl libraries that are available to the win9x system what are the problem and possably why bort can run this as he patched his system with library files from win2000. If he were to explain and post how he did that then other people might be able to use the opengl client on win9x systems as well. I tested the opengl client on win9x for some friends of mine who can no longer use the DX client but don't have windows 2000 (and whom I can't convince to make the switch to 'nix).
hi, I just drop a line to tell that I run 98SE and I experience the low ressource (gdi and system) problem too (it keeps on decreasing and the client crashes after less than 15 minutes...
I was about to test openGL client but if you say it does not work either... argg ! no crossfire ion 98, what a pity. Well, maybe it will be sorted out someday.
gtk client is quite fine apart from that.
