Salathar and I did at one point have a modification that made using rods require a player to have use magic item at the level of the rod. This worked but we wanted to have it innvoke spell failure when cast at too high a level, rather than just not working.
We didn't get it working for monsters casting rods (they seem to use some other lump of code we couldn't grok)
We also wanted to have wands act similarly, but with a lower failure rate (ie more likely to cast spells succesully).
Unfortunaly we didn't get to see what happens when a wand waving pixie smites itself......
The other thing that would've been required would be to reduce the value of rods amd wands by a factor of 5 or so.....
Work was abandoned due to coursework deadlines, I might be persuaded to restart it though if anyone thinks this is a good way to implement it....
rods WAY to powerfull [edited]

Dont just knock rods. Its the monsters that fire the same rods multiple times to, making it not fun to be in..

Could adding a default skill level for a monster, like pixie, level 1 magic item, can only use level 110 banishment rod at level 1 affect?
