Guilds offer their members a substantial amount of power that is not otherwise easily obtainable (recharging crystals, teleporters, masses of storage space, etc)
What I propose is that this power be offset, by having an area inaccessible to guild members. That there be a Russell guild, that has a membership comprising of those characters that are not a member of any guild.
Any comments or suggestions, particularly on how to implement such a thing? (I am not sure if it can be done other than by having a key that destroys guild keys, and that still doesn't stop guild keys being dropped first, then picked up later).

Yes, that would be the entire point, that it would be primarily a guild for newbies and newbie-likes.
Probably however scorn or navar would be bad places for it, placing it anywhere else would require getting there, which involves some exploration for anyone who has not played before.
What I am describing is pretty much the adventurer's guild in stoneville, but with recharging crystals and a couple of teleporters (though not to high level places obviously) and without the monsters.

If you are letting lvl 1 people into this guild, they are probably going to die via the crystal.
And if you do put any items there, what's to prevent newbielayer1 from taking them all thinking it's a free map - as he didn't do anythign special to gain entrance.
Maybe have some sort of process whereby they gain entrance letting them know the house rules?
You are also giving a big power boost to every new character who will be a member of this guild via default until (if ever) they decide to join another. Charging crystals are one of the big points of joining a guild in the first place, as other then that you have storage space which we all have plenty of in apartment's, so I'm not sure I'm in favor of the idea.

Good points:
If it were based off the adventurers guild, I would suggest that lvl1 characters would be more likly to die via a demilich....
Anyway, if they avoided both of them, they would just die via goblin, or ogre, or gate, or etc etc. Realistically lvl 1 characters role in life is to die, ideally in bizarre and amusing ways
I have been thinking about how to do this, I am still not sure how to get around the dropping keys issue, maybe have all guild keys kill an invisible 'russel guild' key, and have a 'have had the russel gulid key' key that would not be killed but would prevent new ones being given.
This is very ugly however, and requires changing all guilds and all guild keys, as well as being fairly complex to do anyway, so I am loathe to try implementing such a thing, I would much rather localise such changes if possible. (which is why I asked for suggestions on how to do that)....

If existing guild keys are replaced with python-based scripts and marker objects what you are suggesting will be much easier to implement. However I still can't say I like the idea very much. It would give low level characters power they do not have to do much to get.
Most high-level portals are avaliable from one apartment or another. If the apartment conector was ever going to get implemented there would no longer be any point of joining a guild at all! Your suggestion seems almost like "guilds are too hard to get into, let's make a guild for everyone".
On the other hand an area only non-guild members could access could be interesting...

I disagree: Many good players I've seen apply for one guild alone, and never been let in, due to that everyone forgets or doesn't know them. It's either that the guilds take more vigilant approach to getting to know their appliees, or there is a guild for the rejected, or forgotted.

Bort once again quite late in posting here, and I tend to disagree with practically everybodys opinion. There is no reason to give non-guild members something, if anything clean up completely inactive guilds(discussed in another thread, much too bothersome to discuss here) or give non guild members access to nethack, which as far as I know is the only complete and utter advantage guild members have over non members. I say this because truly, what does a person need 1 billion diamonds for, if you have 1 million your already more then set to do absolutely anything in the game.
