Make sure you re-connect to the same server that you originally created your character on.
A small popup window should appear asking you your char name. You will then be prompted (again, by a small popup window) for your password. Assuming no typos, and that you saved out on a Bed or Reality to leave the game in the first place (vs 'quit or client-> quit) you should then log back in as your character.
Remember, usernames (character names) and passwords are CaSe SeNsItIvE.

When you exited you may have selected "quit character" from the menu. This actually deletes the character from the server. To save and quit you should apply a bed to reality.
It is also possible (although unlikely) that you are one of those unfortunate enough to suffer from the Windows GTK bug that prevents the queries from appearing sometimes. If you don't get anything when you connect try typing the username directly into the input box at the bottom of the screen, followed by enter. Then type your pasword into the same box and hit enter again.

Debian
I use Debian(linux) and had a similar error, it was caused by the permision in the /var or /temp directories. If the server you connect to is in your computer may be because it is actually not running, try typing: ps aux [enter] in prompt, there "crossfire" must appear, if it doesn't, run the server, type : crossfire -detach. as root.
