Client bug: networking

Post by jan »

I have one of the latest cvs clients running on 2 machines, both with Mandrake 9.0. One is connected to a LAN and through a firewall to the internet, the other is on an ADSL connection (Ethernet card to an ADSL router).

The one on the LAN runs the client without problems; the one on ADSL will run for a while and then suddenly hang, waiting for a reply from the server. This always happens when it is inconvenient, of course, and it isn't enough to close the client, I have to reboot - if I just close the client and open it again, I can't log in; the server says 'that name is already in use'.

I have evidently tried to get more diagnostics, but apparently I have to go and actually debug the program to see what goes on. My network connection is fine - all other networking programs work fine, and the server is OK too, since I can connect with another character. Before I go off and do horrible things to the client source, are there any suggestions?

(I have one, BTW: Instead of simply rejecting a new logon attempt with this char, let the user give password, then warning: 'You are already logged on. If you proceed, that char will be pushed off and you will be back in [last bed to reality]' - I'll post this on 'Suggestions' too)

This was happeining to me as well but no longer, I think this may have something to do with the sound buffer- do you have the sound package installed?
I also think this has been identified and a fix is on the way.

Sound? That might be it - I have sound on both machines, but I don't use it, and the one that doesn't get stuck has a more mainline type of sound card. So maybe I just rebuild without sound, then?

I think there's a way to disable sound without recompiling - but can't tell how :)

in configuration/general tab there is a sound option (at least in version 1.7.0) I know I have it switched off and never hear sound from the game, is this the way you were thinking of?
