Dreads, beholders, skulls, angels, and certain other things are resist magic +100. If you happen to be a pure spellcaster, they'll be immune to what you usually throw at them. If you have decent STR, DEX, and CON, just whack them with your best weapon. If you're of Gaea, banish them. Bombs and shockwave are the only mage spells I know of that damage these things.

What do you want to use to attack the dread?

Range based spell or other magic attack, melee attack, etc.

In my experience, you'll need to be around level 20-25 in one-handed weapon skill. Switching weapons to one that has more attack types and higher damage would also help.

You'll definately need the resistances mentioned earlier, especially confusion.

The other thing you want is good speed. A weapon of slay beholder wouldn't go amiss either, I consider mine indispensible.

In terms of taking damage from them, reflect spells and fire+cold should be sufficant, above level 30-odd a dread shouldn't be able to kill you that quickly as long as you have confusion and paralyse resist, consider a ring of free action a prerequisite.

Oh and keep a high level word of recall available, dreads seem quite competent at making me cast that....

Elf? I hope you have good ranged. Anyhow, earthwall it. It can't see you now and won't attack much. Empty arrows into it. An alternative is bomb throwing, but keep in bind bomb kills walls. Or, rune of blasting and just forget earthwall. Just remember it's AI makes it run away to avoid physicals.

Personally I don't use bombs that much (being denied detonation might have something to do with that....).

Normally I find that corners are my friends, and, hit a dread enough and they will be in one fairly quickly.
