Yeah, I KNOW the possible server settings can make death Perm., but when it's not perm., the settings need tweaking.
Point: It's been said many times that players don't explore enough, they'd rather go to the TC.
CounterPoint: A player who tries to push the edge in re: to abilities is RAPED of exp. if he's killed, and it only gets worse the higher he/she gets.
TC, known foe. Exploring, Unknown foe. All the same, death = death.
I just lost 6+ billion exp. by trying to explore. Want people to push the edges of their abilities? Want people to explore the maps? DROP THE MASSIVE DEATH PENALTY! It's that simple.
NOBODY wants to lose DAYS (+) worth of exp. earning for just poking their nose into a new area. The penalty is too high! It's stopping players from exploring.
DROP THE DEATH PENALTY!

Not true.. I have played since 92.. I have never stopped exploring.. Big Maps is a pain in the be-hind and makes me not want to explore (I hate getting stuck on unpassable mountains and have to back-track just to get to certain coordinates) but I still *do* explore (not that I find anything
if there is no death-penalty, why even bother playing? It defeats the purpose..
*maybe* what should happen is.. you "die".. now you have 20-30 minutes for someone to help you recover your corpse, or you have to complete some small quest.. If you pass.. you don't get penalty.. but to get rid of it? That's bad..
Maybe if someone casts resurrect on you, you don't loose xp.. otherwise, you do.. IMHO, no penalty for doing something silly (when I enter unexplored area, I have cast protection spells, and have healing potions at hand) is silly..

That's why you use TC to learn technique to avoid surfing cold spells..
For one, counterspell works great... or counterwall in the right direction..
Personally.. I learned the hard way.. At level 85 fireborne (-30 cold), I surfed an icestorm cast by a level 25 creature.. Dropped 380hp.. I had 395..
Thank you word of recall!

I lost a lot of billion xp too, not exploring, but because my god was angry (i cast red death twice instead of one, i cast WoR without mana, etc...)
But i think the death penalty is a good thing, and 20 percent a good number.
The problem is that if you want to make the 600 million xp you lost, you MUST go through TC. If there were a very hard to kill monster worth 50 or 100 million xp, with hard quest, etc... TC would become just a boring place (which it is really).

More to say, but not now, must sleep.
I'll leave w/ this, though. We shouldn't be surfing cold spells! Or any OTHER spell that has the ability to push stuff around. If the powers that be decide that we SHOULD be surfing spells, I hope the have the wit about them to note that we should NOT take full damage from the spell we're surfing. We've already taken 100% of the damage from the spell assuming we're NOT pushed. Yet we take 100% again and again while surfing? O.o BAD! WRONG! : P
Lv 110 Ancient dragon. Ok, I get the idea that I'm kinda large, yet cold spells can and do push me around with no problem. I don't have a large problem w/ the pushing, I DO have a large problem w/ the "taking full damage all the way" while being pushed.

This is fixed in CVS.Mulley2 wrote: I'll leave w/ this, though. We shouldn't be surfing cold spells! Or any OTHER spell that has the ability to push stuff around. cf.mf.net has not been updated with the latest CVS changes.
Az.. When was the last time you fought the nasty slug in Ancient Pupland? He's worth about that! (I think it comes with 4 or 5 parts, each one being about 5million experience).. I know that is the ONLY monster in the game that I fear to face... As a DM on my local server I was trying out some maps and was curious about the slug.. well.. the thing ball-lightning me to death in 7 seconds.. I had ~500hp.. (went out of DM mode for a test

As a side comment and totally off-topic I have to mention that my "adventures" in Ancient Pupland stopped when I died in less than a second at the highest level. And that didn't happen once, either...Zortan wrote:Az.. When was the last time you fought the nasty slug in Ancient Pupland?
