Giving away equipment - your thoughts?

I really hate it when I give away equipment, and this happens

Giving away equipment - your thoughts?

Starting a poll and discussion.

Here's the situation...

While playing Crossfire, you decide for one reason or another to give away some equipment.

You drop it in the middle of Scorn and shout to everyone that there is free equipment, free for the taking.

(BTW, The poll will run for 14 days)

Not too keen on giving away equipment on such a basis - it hurts the economy. That is not to say I am adverse to players giving items to other players on a more intimate basis (selling, as a gift...even holding an auction) but dumping your stuff onto the ground is very open to abuse for all the reasons mentioned in this poll. I think folks should dump them into the shops even if they don't need the money.

"back in the days...".. you used to have to WORK to get stuff.. Now days, crossfire in some respects have become a joke.. I am all for helping newbies, maybe even occassional piece of equipment here and there, but once you start outfitting people completely, they miss out on the struggle some of us had to go through..and the experience we picked up along the way..

..maybe my issue, really, is with people not appreciating help, but expecting it.. The facts listed in the poll are that, facts.. I once left 10-15 small piles of platinum for newbies to share.. one newbie took it all.. none left for anyone else.. People have become selfish (whether it's taking everything people pass out to share, or taking over a map for hours at a time..).. The atmosphere has changed a lot.. People expect you to give them levels (by killing for them).. They expect that you're there to serve them..

..almost makes a guy want to go on a p-killing spree to teach them a lesson...sorry.. already got that out of my system :)

I'm thinking of making a shop in Scorn similar to the Santo Dominion shop where Items can be dropped for sale but the shop doesn't reset like other maps. IIRC the Santo Dominion shop has a lever that players can use to delete the items. I think this leaves it open to "abuse" by some player that gets upset that s/he can't afford something. Instead of placing a lever that regular players could use to reset the map make a hidden lever that DMs could get to to reset the map and delete the items if needed.

Thoughts?

I like the idea, but if it's only meant to be cleanable by DMs, why does it need a lever at all? `remove and `free should work nicely, or `reset.

Perhaps a shop could be made where the price is LOW so newbies can afford to buy the good equipment, but still have to buy it..

Even when you could argue "hey, you are giving away items, what do you care what will happen to them anyway?" the way i like to see it is, yes i dont care as long as they get used for good, and the attitude of those in front of a pile of shiny things really tells you something about that person, even if you are there or not, those who ask if the pile is able to be picked up are those who more likely diserve to get it and use it.
What i hate most is that someone (i dont care about the level) takes it all and sells it, reason why i mostly only drop books from time to time.
But another thing is that someone comes while you are standing there still (for whatever reason) and they just pass through the pile take it all and leave without saying a word. It's not that i'm waiting for them to thank, but hey! i was there! i'm not invisible! (not this time :lol:)

I just copied the Santo D map and modified it. The lever stays and is moved behind a wall only DMs can pass through. If a DM wants to use a different method ... well, DMs can do almost anything they desire within the rules laid down for DMs on metalforge. The lever is a quick and easy way to clear the map IMO. A lot quicker than typing 'reset /some/cryptic/map/name/and/path'. ;-)

I'm setting up a local server to test this map here. I hope to have it included in the big world CVS maps in the near future.

Considering how stable those commands have proven to be, I'd rather have a lever. :lol:

Nothing wrong with the 'reset' command as far as I know- but you cannot reset unique map spaces...thats sort of the point. All non unique spaces on the map will reset however.
As for remove - it has always been very dangerous AFAIK since it is pretty easy to remove something that is not there and get a fatal error. Also remove is a single item sart of command - not something likely to be used to clean up a map.
