Heeelp! Can't log in after losing connection.

Post by Firebrand »

I lost my connection maybe five minutes before the timestamp of this message. My in-game name is Firebrand. When I try to log back in, it says "That name is already in use."

I created a temporary character to log on and shout for help. Indeed, my real account was still listed among the active players when I used the 'who' command. I can't log in, and I can't log myself out. Does the server have some way of auto-disconnecting idle players, or will I just starve to death and then starve to death in my apartment and keep starving till I'm back to level 1?

Please... could an administrator fix this? Also, can I be restored? I saved fairly recently in my apartment. Thanks.

Also, is there an in-game bug-alert command? Thanks.

Whew! Finally got back in.

Still, the fact that this can happen is still a bug I guess someone might want to know about.

It's not really a bug. Sometimes the connection is lost on the client side, but not the server one. Thus server thinks player is still connected.

But eventually the server will detect the lost connection, your character will be disconnected, and you'll be able to reconnect.

I'm glad to hear the game does detect dead connections. I won't worry about it then.

If I ever do find a real bug, is there a command in the game for reporting it, or is this bulletin board it?

From the TODO list,

- If player tries to login with same name/password as a character currently
active, drop the old connection and associate the player with the new
connection. Useful if connection is dropped but server hasn't detected
it yet.

At this time, there is no "in game" function to report a bug.

The Bugs forum on here is for discussion of potential bugs.

Ultimately, bugs should be reported to Sourceforge http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_i ... tid=113833 or emailed to the cf-devel mailing list <crossfire-devel@lists.real-time.com>

As Leaf pointed out, no.
But if you are using latest GTK client, there is a function 'report a bug' in 'help' menu, which will give you some text to paste when reporting a bug (versions, stuff like that)

I didn't know this.

Is this feature in both the *nix and Windows GTK clients?

Tchize added it just before 1.6.1 release.
And yes, on both platforms.

My cable conx has been finniky lately.. This weekend I lost conx at least 3-4 times a day.. That's why I haven't played much lately.. Last time my char was locked up for 15 minutes and no one around to kick him off.. When he did log off, I was out of food and my hp draining due to starvation.. THat would be a sorry way to die.

Perhaps there is a way to implement self-kicking if you're on a matching IP.. of course there COULD be abuse, but you could specify to kick a character with his password..
