It doesn't mention anyplace that you need to include add the lib directory for GTK in your DOS path, which the GTK installer doesn't do by default. Result?

Even after you install GTK, the CF client can't find it!
The problem is that it's a GTK issue, not a Crossfire one.
GTK installer, for some reason, doesn't work correctly all the time. Thus some (many?) users experiment troubles.

Oh, and the PATH trick doesn't always work. Sometimes GTK will search for files in %winnt%\system32\etc\gtk2.0 which doesn't exist....

And for your information, my GTK was installed with Gaim, and I had _no_ issue whatsoever with it.

%winnt% is not universal to all versions (and apparently %commonfiles% isn't either, as it doesn't work on my Win2k) but all Windows variants should know what %programfiles% means.

Yes, it is a GTK issue, but it's easily enough worked with one little registry change that I think would be possible to put into the installer of the Windows version of the binary. For that matter, the installer could check for the existance of GTK in the default install location and pop up a message with a link saying "Download and install this, then try running this installer again.:

I totally disagree with the above statement. This is a Crossfire Installation problem. Look at the bottom of this web page: http://www.dropline.net/gtk/support.php

It tells you that if you are using GTK, you need to modify the Windows Registry to make the paths work. I did this by hand and it works. I would modify the installation program, but it doesn't appear to be in CVS.

I personally haven't seen problems with the GTK installer, and if those exist, they obviously aren't Crossfire problems. :)

BTW, I do agree with many points in the above messages and would love to see crossfire gain a greater acceptance.

Now that's a useful link. Never saw that, guess i'll hafta fix paths for next installer version....
Doesn't change the fact it works for me without this key, though...
