Windows GTK 1.6 client crashing on libpng.dll

Post by Guest »

On Win98, I startup the GTK client. It opens up fine, although DOS window does show some errors, but scrolls by too quickly to get them all.

When I tried to connect to a server, I see the window showing "downloading image 1 of 4724" or something, then I get a fatal error:

GTKCLIENT caused an invalid page fault in
module LIBPNG.DLL at 0167:6de087ec.

I checked, and have version 1.2.4 of libpng.dll. I've searched everywhere and can't find a solution for this. Can anyone out there help me out?

Thanks

Did you install the client via the installer? Which GTK version did you install?

Are the messages in DOS window real errors? or information messages like 'character height', 'HOME not set, setting it to .'?

It seems that you are connecting to a server and need to download some graphics. Which apparently crashes your client...

Downloaded and installed:
GTK-Runtime-Environment-2.2.4.1.exe

Installed GTK client 1.6.0

First error I get is the HOME error, the rest all seem to be font errors not found, defaulting to different font.

DOS window scrolls to fast to get a good grasp of what all the errors are.

Is there a way to download all of the graphis to my computer somewhere? I saw some info on that but when I downloaded the files, it was a tar file and after untaring it, I didn't see any images in it. Was just a bit confused as to where to put the files also.

Any help would be appreciated!

I started playing Crossfire back in 1994-5 or so. Wanted to get back into it again.

I just uninstalled/reinstalled the GKT client, still same errors.

I went in and messed with some configs. I disabled Image Cache'ing and instead of erroring out with libpng.dll, it now errors out with <unknown>

I can bring up the client just fine. I can type in a server number, and get the connecting message, and I even see the starting char login text. Then I get the new <unknown> error message.

The only errors I'm getting in DOS window are no HOME specified, error with gdk_char_width and gdk_char_height.
Says they are 3 and 1 respectively.
Then I get a bunch of couldn't load font "MS Sans Sarif *" failing back to Sans 8 font messages.

Hope this helps.

The 'font not found' messages may be hints of an issue. I'm not sure how GTK finds fonts, but you seem to be missing some fonts. And I don't know whether the gdk_char_xxx messages are bad or not.

Now the issue may be something else.
For your information, the client installer installs client bitmaps already. But they are 'old' ones, newest servers with smoothing & such will require you to download some pics. But, as usual, it seems to be an issue on some clients / OSes....

I f inally got the windows client to work. What I had to do was copy the entire lib and etc directory from the GTK install into the crossfire client directory.

I'm still getting a ton of MS font not found messages in dos window, and is slowing me down quite a bit. Next step is to solve that issue.

I'm not sure what to recommend, however:

I presume you found this post? Did it help?

See the post by Lord_SilverStone (second one).

After following the suggestions found on these pages - are you still seeing the missing file error?

Has the error message changed at all?
