Mountains of insanity

Post by Logwad »

It seems to me, that the big world maps used by crossfire.metalforge.net are full of mountains with islands of green areas.

This makes the bigworld map very, very difficult to navigate.

It wouldn't be so bad if you could see more than one space, but you can't. Its hard to tell the diffrence between mountain that you can move across and mountain that you can't.

Besides its not very realistic (it seems you certainly took pains to create daylight/nightime conditions, and then also add variables such as temperature, humidity, and others) . Shouldn't there be ranges of mountains rather than just island of grass and tree?

One thing that would be interesting would be that if you are in mountains, that you can see "over" other mountains that are a lower elevation that you, sort of creating a "vally" affect, rather than a "stuckinthemiddleofabigblacktallforestwithnohopetogetout" affect.

What would also be neat is if there was on a website a general map of the bigworld maps, with cities, mountains, forests, plains and seas that are named.

Also compasses and maby a logistics skill could be created, so you could find out where the heck you are in reference to the map on that web site. big world maps are about 29x29 small maps that i shall asume are equal length, and guess that they are 50x50 tiles each, so you have a continent about 1450x1450 tiles across. So you could have a grid on the website map and with better logistics skill you could get more and more accurate location readings.
"you are at about position 300, 1200" 1st lvl
"you are at about position 320, 1250" 2nd lvl
"you are at position 326, 1258" 3rd lvl

Other than those cursed mountains, I really like how big the big world map is, it actually takes time to cross the continent.

Something like compass/ was discussed some time ago on mailing lists, but i don't know if someone if actually implementing that or not...

As for mountains, i think (hope!) slowly stuff will be added & such, thus filling those void spaces

you mean the spaces filled with mountains, or the few that aren't -_^

There are mountain ranges.
There is also a map of the bigworld (a bit dated - the Ring Mountains aren't on the map but the continent shape is there)

I like them, most of all when i use the climbing skill... but i dont like so many unpassable mountains all around the world... if you think about it the percentage is really high respect to the "world" size :D

Somtihng that really bugs me - is that on the Big World Maps - its extraordinarily difficult to find any of the other places that used to be so easy to find - like the Tower of Stars - or the Tower of Demonology - or the Cave that was just south of Brest on the Original World maps ...

I think what we do need is somthing like what was already suggested - eg: some way of giving out map coordinates or locations so we know at where we've been and can (hopefully) find our way out and maybe back to where we have been...

I think about 60 to 80% of the path between Navar and Scorn is bordered by mountain... That is disproportionately large for any map.

What we should do is add in some large patches of grass and desert in appropriate areas and maybe a few large swamps near rivers, since there are mostly 1-tile swamps now.

The mountains should be concentrated as a few chains around Brest and just west of Navar. Basically one eastern Mountain range and one western range. There can be a few stray hills and mountains in the main continent, but it would be mostly flat.

Also, the volcano on the continent could be part of the Brest mountain range, which could then extend east of Euthville and east of Santo Dominion until it hits ocean. (Lorak would be in this mountain range if we included the patch on cf.mf.net)

The poll is missing "I hate the whole big world mapset" option.

A lot of these blocks will be 'carved out' and the insides used for special areas I expect. Actually having the impassable mountains increases the map size if you think about it - at least the apparent size - much the same way a fractal has more surface area.
