I think we should have this poll as "What OS do you use to play Crossfire?" as a poll on the actual website, although those polls don't seem to get a lot of votes...
When I look at that poll right here, it seems that Windows users might be more common than thought by some developers in the suggestions part here.
Looks like the number of Windows users has been growing lately and I'm curious to see the result.
I hope it results in a win client that doesn't have a general protection fault every 5-10 mins. :)

Or links from the main webpage to this forum. Dunno how it would work. Well, it's up to Leaf.

I'm not a developer. Just a plain player. :)

When I started playing Crossfire I was still on Windows platform and I used the (in)famous DX client. It is indeed important that we get a stable Windows (or rather crossplatform) client. I have high hopes for the new SDL client.. :roll:

I use window 98
At first I couldn't get the GTK client to work, so I say the DirectX xlient and it looked rather nice, so I download it and it works great (with the exception of some garbled pictures) all while thinking that the GTK client is better.

Well later I download the GTK client and get it to work, and it is absolutly horrible for my computer. Its slow, ugly, you have to resize everything and still nothing fits right. In my opinion, the directX version is a lot better, and it has things like a map screen, chat history box.

Its a shame its labeled abandonware (which I assume means no one is going to do anything more on it).

No one is going to work on it because we don't have the sources, and they will never be released. There is a reason behind this but I don't know the full story. :roll:

Hopefully the new SDL client will eventually supersede the DX client.

Good question, the long and short answers are..

SDL = Simple DirectMedia Layer (SDL) is a cross-platform multimedia library that allows you low level access to a video framebuffer, audio output, mouse, keyboard, and joysticks across a wide variety of operating systems such as Linux, Windows, MacOS, MacOS X, et al.

How does this relate to Crossfire?

A skinnable (GUI) Crossfire Client using SDL is under development.

No, I'm not (quite) dead...

And I'm still supporting the SDL Client. I had other priorities recently, explaining why no new version has been officially released.

If you have some trouble with the current SDL Client, please let me know. Simply drop me a mail. Some guidelines:

- Give me your configuration details: CPU, Amount of memory, Graphic Card; do not forget the screen resolution and the color depth;

- Give me your software configuration: OS used (Linux, Windows 2000, Windows XP, etc), SDL version; do not forget your graphical drivers: DirectX version for Windows, GLX implementation drivers for Linux/X;

- If you encounter some visual problems, try to take a screenshot of it as well (please, host them in your own webspace, as the size of my mailbox isn't infinite. Try uploadit.org if you don't have online hosting);

- And finally, describe your problem(s); try to provide as many details as possible, so I can attempt to reproduce them.

Expect some new version before the end of the month, unless moles are invading my playfield again.
