I know alot of you may be Crossfire fans, but I was wondering, if any of you were interested in alternatives to Crossfire. I mean, I am a fan of MANY MMORPGs. Here is a link to one, and I am giving names if you want to google for them.
Furcadia
Blade Mistress (Google for it as I don't have the link anymore).
Arianne
Realms of Chaos
Multiplayer Dot Com
Finally, there was an Online RPG beta testing mega site, which you can google for called the Online Beta Testers Guild. That's how I got in on the W3 expansion beta. And heard about Dransik and Blade Mistress.
Enjoy.

Good question, although I personally think Tibia looks better than Crossfire.philc wrote:But why do those ugly RPGs get more players than CF does?

I don't care whether the game looks good or not.. it's all up to how playable it is. If the interface is really simple and easy to learn a lot of people will try it out.. and eventually some of them will get hooked.. and that way, even more people hear of the game, try it out and start playing it (semi-)regularly.
Also.. those prosperous closed source projects are usually very centralized. One server, one messageboard, zero scary mailing lists (go and ask a regular windows user what a mailing list is) and so on..

This is indeed a good question. I asked some Tibia players around me why they didn't like Crossfire. Some of the answers I got:
- Graphically poor: You may find Tibia ugly, but it is the general opinion that it is less ugly than Crossfire. Smooth moves is probably the most important point about that;
- Lack of environment interaction: Crossfire is basically limited to bash'n'crash. Tibia has a more complex economical system, and is able to interact with the game environment in a larger variety of ways;
- Interface: The interface of Crossfire is in general considered ugly, because it leaves only a small space for the game view, the rest being consumed by various stats, equipment and log windows;
- World Size: The world of Tibia seems larger than the world of Crossfire, and as such offers a longer gameplay.
The argument saying that "Crossfire is free, and as such you're free to expand it if you want" isn't a concern for most players - they're players, not coders.

Map is bigger than cf??!! I think it's greatly impobable, simply if they tried cf they quitted before exploing it.
Anyway bigworldmap cuts the head off to that problem.
For economic system I have a draft ready for it, but it needs review and in the condition I'm now, I think it will not be ready anytime soon. I accept help for this work.
Enviroment interaction will be improved if someone writes some AI for the npc an with DM events.
Anyway for me the main concern is to fix economy, that's most important for players.

Let me be clearer about that point.dark.schneider wrote:Map is bigger than cf??!! I think it's greatly impobable, simply if they tried cf they quitted before exploing it.

By "bigger map" I had not only the global size in mind, but also the number of things on it. The bigworld map may be much bigger than the older CF world, yet it doesn't contain more dungeons. A huge but (quite) empty map isn't sufficient to captivate new players - more than that, they're usually quickly bored to find nearly nothing in the vast world.
So I globally disagree with the idea that bigworld solves the world size problem - it is just a starting point, but not a self-sufficient solution IMHO.
